Superficiality at Bucknell

I’ve heard that Bucknell is pretty much just a ‘‘rich kids’’ school of students spending their ''Daddy’s money"… How superficial is the student body at Bucknell really like?

I’m not a fan of gross generalizations…and i know that there are exceptions everywhere…but I’ve heard about this generalization a lot that it kind of concerns me a bit…

Any insights?

What do you expect at a small private college?

FYI - ALL, and I mean ALL private schools are considered rich kid schools, look at how much it costs to go to them? Find me a better than average private school that isn’t full of rich kids?

imprcll:

you bring up two issues. one: how wealthy is the student body at bucknell? two: is the student body superficial?

on the first question, yes, bucknells student body is, on average, wealthy by most standards. however, is it NOT particularly wealthy when compared with its peers (top 50 lacs, for example). in fact, if the top 50 lacs were ranked from wealthiest to least wealthy by the percentage of students receiving pell grants (federal grants for lower-income students) and percentage of students applying for financial aid, bucknell would rank 30th. bucknell would tie for 26th (with lehigh) on a national universities top 50 list (and tie for 23rd among the 35 private top-50 universities).

yes, three PUBLIC schools have fewer pell grant recipients than bucknell: william and mary, virginia and wisconsin.

on the second question, yes, there are some superficial people at bucknell. however, coming from a high school where the ‘wealthier’ kids tended to look down at most everyone else, i was genuinely impressed with how non-judgemental the vast majority of the student body was. i probably shouldnt have been, though. its pretty hard to be judgmental when half the student body goes to class in sandals, sweatpants and a four-year-old free tshirt.

ahhh… that’s comforting to know, ericaatbucknell :)
