Superman Returns Disappoints

Superman Returns Disappoints

The movie made $85 million over its first five days, including a $53 million weekend. While not bad, it is lower than Warner Bros expected since the movie had a budget of $260 million. Warner needs to make about $520 million just to break even.

For comparison, Fox’s X-Men: The Last Stand made $102 million over three days on a $210 million budget. X2 made $85 million on a $110 million budget. X-Men made $55 million on a $75 million budget.

For further comparison, Sony’s Spider-Man 2 made $152 million over five days including an $89 million weekend on a budget of $200 million. Spider-Man made $114 million in its opening weekend on a $139 million budget.

Perhaps Warner Bros just doesn’t know how to market its comic book movies. Superman Returns is an improvement over 2005’s Batman Begins which made $72 milion over five days including a $49 million weekend on a $150 million budget. Even Fox’s Fantastic Four, which received poor reviews, made $56 million on its opening weekend on a $100 million budget.

Superman is a lame hero. Maybe Jerry Seinfeld can help WB out by watching the movie 1000 times in IMAX.
