Recently for government we were given an assignment to explain the major reasons behind our political choices (liberal vs. conservative, republican vs. democrat). I’m wondering if this would be appropriate for a supplement essay since my counselor said that it could be about anything i wanted.

i’m planning on majoring in biology and my essay explained how my views on faith and science combine to make an interesting mix of conservative and democratic views mostly based on compromise within the culture war.

the essay would obviously be edited heavily to fit the purpose but would this be an appropriate topic?

I think it would be fine. Usually topics such as religion, politics, and race should be avoided but your moderate views show open-mindedness and a willing to consider both sides of a scenario, which are important qualities.

It would not be inappropriate but you could do much better than that. Represent yourself. Write something more personal and revealing than an academic essay. They already have your grades, scores, and recommendations for that. The supplement, in my opinion, should be used for a second personal rather than academic essay. Copies of academic essays mean next to zilch in admissions, unless they are science abstracts or EXCEPTIONAL creative writing samples (winning awards on the national or international level). In those cases, the appropriate faculty reviews them and reports back to Admissions.
