supplement too long?

Not realizing that the supplemental essay is supposed to be shorter than the common app essay, I ended up writing two essays of the same length–roughly three pages, double spaced, or 900 words.

I’ve been trying to cut down either of them, but considering I’ve spent weeks polishing these essays, I’m completely unable to.

Do you think this essay is too long for the supplementary?

Any and all help appreciated!

Have you read what Yale says about length? 900 won’t be seen favorably at all. You’re frankly trying to say too much. The length limitation is an exercise in itself – not just an open request to hear something from you. Best of luck to you.

That’s too long, for either essay, but especially the Yale one. You need to find a better way to express yourself concisely.

I think 900 might even be a bit much for the Common App. My teacher said that as a general rule, if the essays were single-spaced, the admissions officers shouldn’t have to flip the page unless the essay is absolutely amazing. So now it’s up to your discretion.
