Supply Chain Issues - Pandemic

Cool thread! H were looking for a couple of outdoor heaters for our outdoor thanksgiving dinner this year, not impossible to find but the ones he really wanted are out of stock.

We bought a patio heater last weekend to hopefully extend our outdoor season. We’re in Southern California and it hasn’t gotten heater-chilly yet. Got the Hampton Bay dark bronze one with a tilting reflector and wheels. Went together easily and fired up nicely. The only other customer in the HD curbside pickup area was buying patio heaters too!

If it’s something you’re thinking about I’d recommend buying sooner than later. May already be too late for cooler climates.

B&M baked beans? Knott’s Berry Farm Boysenberry preserves (or even Smuckers, but with seeds.) Grape Nuts Flakes cereal?

^^^. Yes H was worried about it too so he ordered 2 patio heaters. Supposed to arrive in 2 weeks. We already have 2 at home. 4 heaters and a fire pit in the patio, hopefully that is warm enough for an outdoor dinner of 12 people. Yes we live in the east coast so it could get down to mid 30’s in late November

We had a fire tower patio heater that had croaked. Mr. wanted to take it apart and recycle the metal (after all, we have a firetable), but has been putting this unpleasant task off. Well… it would have been a shame to dispose of it now! A $10 part from Amazon and some elbow grease later, and we have a working heater.

So I went to the market, thought of you all, and yes, there are things flat out missing from the shelves. Some bottled juices that were there last week and on sale. I got some of the last of the French cut frozen green beans. (Plenty of fresh whole green beans, but I wasn’t liking the last batch of those.)

I looked down the paper goods aisle and by the TP and paper towels, it was just a vast wasteland. Ugh. But a local drug store has plenty of inexpensive (but good) TP.

We bought a really ugly outdoor heater, but it works great. I think the cost was about $80. It sits on a propane tank, purchased separately. It’s made for construction sites. It came from Home Depot.

Around here patio heaters have been hard to find. Somebody told me that when she heard Home Depot had them back in stock (a few weeks ago - here in NJ where fall has arrived), she immediately rushed there and bought 4 of them!

Yes, people are still panic buying bulk, so that is not helping the supply chain situation.

Some jigsaw puzzles were sold out in early summer, not sure what the situation is now.

Looks like puzzles are back in stock - bought a few already as holiday gifts

I pretty much bought doubles and triples of everything I like or use like running shoes when this started. I told my wife to do the same. She’s now just getting how bad it is.

I’m fully expecting this to worse before it gets better or this could be the new normal.

Our marina had an accident with our boat in June. Wiped out the windshield and bimini. Still no fix and I’m starting to wonder if it will ever be fixed.

My wife wants new kitchen cabinets. I told her several months ago to start the process and we might have it by early next year. She looked at me funny. When the cabinet maker told her January her jaw dropped.

Canning jars and lids but I always overstock so wasn’t an issue.

Bicycles and kayaks were tough to find from the beginning but we were good. Just looking to upgrade one of our kayaks.

Pretty much any building or remodeling supplies are hit or miss. My friend is selling his home and hired a crew to update everything. The conversation was more like “here’s what we have” vs “what would you like done?”

@somemom, I couldn’t get B&M baked beans, either. I ended up ordering a case of 12 on Amazon!

For those of you hunting for rubbing alcohol, our local Walgreens stores keep it behind the cashier counter. You have to ask for it and they only seem to have it for a day or two after they get their weekly delivery.

I hope all the home owners buying patio heaters isn’t going to create a situation where restaurants whose ability to thrive might rely on outdoor heaters can’t get them. Seems like a lot of people buying a heater just for a few hours turkey dinner.

The owner of our local burger/hot dog small business just mentioned this…he had a hard time finding a couple of outdoor heaters, but finally did. Outdoor heaters are a must in Chicagoland, where I fear many more restaurants will be out of business by next March.

We get take out fairly regularly to try to help keep our favorite places in business. We also tip super high to try to help the workers.

In addition to the things mentioned above, my optician says the eyeglasses lab is taking at least a month making lenses. It used to be about two weeks. Contacts are coming just fine. I get them through him because they have great customer service (and are replacing a pair free, which is what I am waiting on).

Most everything is back on the shelves where I am, but it can be spotty here or there depending on brand or flavor. Daily shower spray is hard to find, so I get it when I find it.

Our trip to VA to FIL’s is delayed, so we opted to go back to the store yesterday getting bread and other basics. Newer signs are up limiting paper products again. I went ahead and stocked up on TP, napkins, paper towels (the bamboo ones of these are fine, just not bamboo TP), and tossed in another box of tissues too - just in case (no limit on tissues yet).

Also picked up a really nice looking lamb roast for tonight. It’ll be nice to have a treat! Beats navigating the interstates today.

Around here, paper products and cleaning things have been limited to one per customer all along. The thing is, the stock has increased so you can go back the next day and buy more if you need to (except for disinfecting wipes that seem to be delivered and gobbled up until the next delivery.

I’m wondering if there will be a turkey shortage. We usually have Thanksgiving with 18 others. This year, there will be at least four turkeys cooked instead of one…because the group isn’t happening. I think I’ll get one ASAP…and just pop it in my freezer until the time comes.

It looks like the turkey growers and grocers are expecting greater demand for smaller turkeys this year and are adjusting accordingly.

@doschicos that’s good because the last thing two of us need is a 30 pound turkey!
