Yes the local grocery is an option. I’d like it to be festive and fun for him. (And no more work than putting it in the microwave!) It will not be properly appreciated, but I have to try!
Costco has all the stuff in the refrigerator/freeze and bakery sections. I’d substitute the $5 roster chicken for turkey but they have several types of potatoes (scalloped, au gratin, mashed), stuffing, gravy, pumpkin pie (or apple, pecan, berry).
Remodelers, shed a tear:
OSB turns into OMG!!! ?
Just finished ordering all the lumber, steel straps, huge engineered beams, engineered I joists, etc for only the first floor of my project. For some reason it appears to be in stock, including huge Vlam beams. Two weeks out. Did not order the large amount of plywood yet.
It came out about $2300 over my estimate from February. Total $8500 including taxes for just one floor !!
Range had ammo today, including (drum roll please) 9 mm.
@mathmom what area of California? Maybe someone can recommend a local grocery store or chain that might have a premade meal.
Youngest D was interested in a property that would need a house built on it to get permanent financing. She talked to a couple of builders and a couple of bankers. With the supply issues and increased lumber costs on top of all the homes lost in the fire she was given the news that it could be $450,000 to build a 1500 sq foot home. It makes the project out of her budget.
Was at Market Basket (a regional New England grocery chain) for my mother this morning. She wanted chicken liver and chicken gizzards, and the employee at the meat counter told me the processors have been so overwhelmed that they’re not bothering to package parts like that and “just throw it all in the trash.” ???
Did you try ethnic grocery stores associated with ethnicities where eating chicken liver is common?
I’m not crazy about chicken gizzards, but livers are a pretty normal thing to eat aren’t they? I agree if you are looking for innards the Hispanic grocery stores are the best bet.
@mom60 - He’s in Mountain View near the Sunnyvale border.
Mathmom, , I just spent 15 minutes trying many google searches to find what you wanted. I have a list of specialty stores, but none yet show a T-day special. avas, sprouts, the milk pail, several Italian. Last Rosh Hashana, my local market had a brisket meal for one at $16. I bought 2.
I’ll ask my kids, as they live same area. 94040
@ucbalumnus Good idea about ethnic market, plus we’ve got a couple of nice indie butchers. I know I’ll be able to find something for her. What I found most interesting was what the store employee said about how large operations are handling their production (plus it’s unverified).
@mathmom Yes – I thought chicken liver was everywhere! I’ve picked it up without a thought at every chain grocer in our area through the years. Gizzards used to be seasonally available starting close to Thanksgiving. Apparently not this year. My mother counts on getting them. I swear if I don’t set her up she’ll probably use mine.
We had trouble finding chicken livers for my Rosh Hashana chopped liver this year. My husband talked to the butchers at Whole Foods and learned when their deliveries would come in. Then he drove over a few minutes early and was there when the butcher opened the carton. The person after him was buying five pounds.
We had also talked to a local upscale grocery - their next delivery was too late for our meal.
So this year it probably will be hard to find chicken livers hanging around the meat coolers in the store. Reminds me of calling Toys R Us to find out when the next Power Rangers were due to arrive.
LOL, just ran into an online store that sells chicken livers - I’m invited to join a waitlist. https://www.crowdcow.com/products/chicken-liver?filter%5Bbid_item%5D=icc4zljvr
There seem to be at least meals for four, which he could he for more than one meal. I’ll look again in November.
I can’t get good packaged chicken from Costco these days. I’ve bought 3 or 4 different batches and all were spoiled! Fortunately they were good about refunding but I’m not going to buy raw chicken from them any more for a long time. The rotisserie chicken is fine as always, as is the other meat.
I am switching to local chicken from local market or my sis says that Whole Foods Chicken is fine too.
This is such a disappointment as it was so convenient to be able to get the boneless, skinless thighs in small packages and freeze them for later use.
Costco hasn’t had their seasonal parchment paper. Asked at one of the business centers and was told it’s been unavailable for 5 months. I guess plastic wrap was an issue too. I didn’t know about that one.
The Costco chicken supply is unpredictable. We picked up a 40 lb box of thighs (with bone). H BBQ’d them all and then seal-a-mealed portions. With the new Cuisinart air fryer they reheat and crisp so well you’d think they just were freshly cooked.
We were able to grab Clorox wipes (5 pack) as well as ZEP disinfectant (2 - 1 gallon containers). Hadn’t been able to find ZEP at HD or Lowes or anywhere on line for months. So it was an exciting day in the COVID prep department.
I got my 12 pound turkey, some cranberry sauce, and stuffing. Figured I’d get this all while it’s available.
We’re getting our Thanksgiving supplies in about 3 hours. Or at least I hope we are!
Well, I don’t know if they’ll be getting more in or not, but today my local grocery store was totally out of frozen turkeys except for 3 “Natural” ones that claim to have been humanely raised, but also claim to have been vegetarian fed, and for turkeys, those two claims are opposite of each other. I had no intention of paying a premium for underfed turkeys preying on people’s lack of knowledge.
It’s a good thing we had one in our freezer from some time ago. It will do. Everything else we wanted for Thanksgiving they had.
At this point, no turkey would fit in my fridge’s freezer. Luckily, we do have a tradition of mixing things up. They may get the sausage fest or stuffed pork chops. That’s if we do TDay.
Yes, things missing on local grocery shelves. I work around it as best I can. Cranberry sauce is a must have, still available. But I have a bag in the freezer, if needed.
Oddly, I had the fantasy, as a young person, of stocking up for winter, living little off the grid. It’s a bit less glamourous when the isolation is imposed by some scary virus.
I got all my Thanksgiving non-perishables yesterday, but so much of the menu gets purchased in the few days before the holiday (fresh herbs, vegetables, fruits, etc.) I usually get my turkey for free from my local supermarket based upon spending over a given amount in the weeks leading up to the holiday. Once I hit that mark I will grab a turkey. We are a small group (3-4) so I get a large frozen turkey breast.
