My D is in her first year at college. She tore a meniscus in her knee while playing a club sport. We may need to decide if or when to schedule surgery. Obviously she does not want to disrupt her academics. This is complicated by the fact that she goes to school several hundred miles away from home.

Has anyone had knee surgery for a torn meniscus? How long did it take to recuperate? Is this something one can do during the semester, living in a dorm without particular help, or should she hobble along (as long as she is not in much pain) and wait until May? She is allowed to take the access van to and from classes.

We have not gotten a recommendation yet. She had an MRI today. I realize that without this recommendation we can’t decide. But I am interested in hearing other people’s experiences with this kind of surgery.

My store manager was just diagnosed with a torn meniscus. She’s mid 40s, overweight, with arthritis and bone spurs in her knee. She is scheduled for arthroscopic surgery on a Wednesday and expects to be back at work on Friday.

My husband had arthroscopic knee surgery on a Friday and was back to work on Monday – that was 28 years ago.

I had surgery for a torn meniscus in January 2012. I can say with certainty, though, that your DD’s healing will likely be much different than mine, especially since she is probably at least 30+ years younger than I and she sounds to be athletic. My tear was a result of ongoing arthritis problems and I’ve had knee problems for several years. It’s no fun, nor is it easy, hobbling around on crutches. I know you haven’t spoken with the doctor yet, but I would follow his lead. If he thinks she can wait and she isn’t too uncomfortable, it might be best to wait. Of course, if she waits, she’s just prolonging the period of time in which she can start back to her normal activities. Good luck to her. I feel her pain and wish her the best!

She must be Superwoman! I would need to look back and see how many days I was off, but she and I sound very similar and I think that’s extremely optimistic.

For a healthy college student, recovery time should be minimal. Schedule the surgery on a Thursday and by Monday she should be able to attend classes. I had arthroscopic surgery on my knee for torn cartilage when I was in college. The worst was the day of the surgery and sleeping off the anesthesia. I went out to the bars with my friends the next day.

I tore my meniscus and postponed the surgery for a few months. Depends on where and how large the tear is for timing of surgery. And of course the pain level! Good that she is young. Recovery time varies but I would suggest she wait until she has time to come home if at all possible.
