I am throwing my hubby a surprise 50 th Birthday party, and need some ideas for funny games for about 50 people. It will be indoors. I have had friends suggest some stuff that sounds really obscene to me, and not funny at all. And I am tearing my hair out for entertainment ideas…

Also as far as decorating goes, I really don’t want to do ‘over the hill’. That is so played out and who wants to be told that you’re done for. I was thinking of just blowing up some childhood photos of him, and putting them up with funny captions.

Why do you need games for a party for adults? And do you really want to do a surprise party instead of giving your husband a chance to help plan something he’d really enjoy?

The best 50th birthday party I’ve been to was an at-home catered event. It had a full bar (with a bartender) and a wonderful dinner all served with uniformed catering staff. No games or activities - just friends brought together to chat and enjoy each other’s company. It was delightful. Make it easy on yourself!!! :)

I threw my husband a surprise 40th birthday party three years ago and people still tell me it’s the best party they’ve ever attended. I hired a friend’s band (they play lots of 60’s and 70’s music) and my in-laws offered up their boat for us to use for the event. The weather was beautiful and we cruised the lake for several hours, dancing the night away. I ordered bbq and the fixins from a local place and my friends helped me get everything out there so my husband would be surprised when we got to the dock. I don’t think games are necessary unless you just want to play them, but most people will probably just have a great time chatting and catching up with others. My FIL’s 70th birthday is coming up next month and my MIL has expressed an interest in hiring the same band and doing the same type of party.

Most importantly, don’t stress yourself out … HAVE FUN!

I went to a dear friend’s surprise 50th birthday party recently which was planned by her hubby and two of her friends. On my invitation there was a hand-written note that said that the people sitting at my table (the names were written on the invitation) had to come up with a funny toast, song, poem, etc. (I can’t remember how it was worded). This way, there were 5 tables with a funny act at each! It was a huge hit!!! The party givers also made a slide show of the b-day girl’s life set to great music…nothing too long.

A great time was had by all, there was lots of laughter, and the b-day girl said it was the best night of her life!!

The party was on a week-night at a Mexican restaurant (they had it all to themselves), with a Mexican-food buffet, margaritas and wine.

If you don’t want to do a slide show, another idea is to have buttons made with a picture of the b-day boy as a baby. Everyone can wear them and then take them home as a party favor/souvenir of the event. Also, another party favor idea is to burn CD’s (also with a pic of the b-day boy on the cover) with hubbie’s favorite songs.

We had a party where we scattered copies of pictures of the guest of honor around the centerpieces at each table. People would go from table to table to check out the different shots.

DH just wanted a dance party. He’s still waiting, but we will do it. I’ve been to 50th birthday parties that had toys to play with like hacky sacks and those thing with three sticks where you keep one in the air. Fifty people is a lot for formal games. For New Year’s Eve parties I’ve played the Dictionary game, charades, Boggle, Pick Two, Apple to Apples, Cranium and many other similar games, but I think you’d have to do these in smaller groups.

I did my H 50ths last year- we did a Hawaii 5-0 party- everyone came in Hawaiin shirts- it was great-

the invitation said

Come get Lei’d at Hs 50th!!!

People loved knowing what to wear

Get some hulahoops

I also got some punch bowls and made three kinds of drinks- cosmos, margaritas, and daqueris, through in some ice, the mix, and people added their own alcohol, it was a big hit

we had a jukebox so people picked out their own songs…

For my H’s - ahem - more than 50th bday upcoming, I’m planning the invitation to feature his hs photo with the perfect Fabian-esque flat-top haircut. He reports spending hours in front of the bathroom mirror to get it that way. I am also going to have a photo on display from about age 13 with a hairdo I don’t even know how to describe - I can tell you that it appears to have involved copious amounts of Brylcreem and incorporates a kind of downswept curlicue on the forehead.

One of our “games” will be prizes to any male who can still replicate the Fabian-flattop. Another to anyone who can produce a photo of a more absurd hairdo than the above-described Brylcreem number.

Other games: how about Name that Tune? with songs from his teenage era?

Oh I totally am doing a surprise party, he is the kind of person that would love it. What’s so funny is that he thinks no-one remembers that it’s coming up, and he keeps dropping little hints, and last week at a friends house he suddenly announced that everyone should come over for a barbecue. There was pin-drop silence, followed by many excuses. Then in the car on the way home he said,“Why didn’t you support the idea of a barbecue on my birthday?” Later he called up his sister to invite her and she said she had something else going on, and can we do it another day. Haha, everyone is in splits.

I have blown up a couple of pictures of him when he actually had hair, and made a really funny slide show that includes a photo of him in my maternity dress  boy will he regret ever doing that!!!

There will be music amd dancing, food and booze, etc.

Maybe you could have a few games around things like walkers, race a course while holding a phone book and a pretend laptop, play telephone with ear plugs to simulate hearing loss…time people on how long it takes to open a jar of something (grease the lid?) …

I have old home movies of my parents, back when no one had money and all they had was time with friends…they had to hold a glass of water against the ceiling with a broom stick, dunk for apples, or two people eating a line of string, first one to get to the apple is the winner… and the games were fun and they all had a lot of laughter…

my garden club (all girls) has an annual frying pay tossing contest…

or, if you are good at it, have a jeopardy game where the questions are all tied to healthy eating/diets…or minimum daily vitamins needed… what foods deliver the right vitamins… all as a play on getting older…

I tried to buy a metal bed pan for a friend’s 50th and they only make plastic ones these days…
