Survival insurance for children of deceased federal gov't employees?

Is there anyone here who has a deceased parent who works for the federal government and has “survivor’s insurance” for college? I am doing research for a Brown University Economics professor and would like to know more about the survivor’s insurance that acts as a financial aid offered to people 18-22 in this situation.

Are you doing this as a research project or because this person wants to know about it for himself? Your post is very confusing. If someone’s parents are deceased, they would no longer be working for the government. The survivors benefit would not be financial aid for college…unless the employee dies.

Sometimes people who have died manage to go unnoticed for a few hours or even a few days. Read this chilling article from Forbes about an employee who was [found dead in her cubicle](Dead In Her Cubicle, No One Notices).

But I agree with what you are saying, such a person would not qualify for tuition reimbursement postmortem, and the survivors’ benefits could be included only as income similar to other social security death benefits for non-federal employees.

CSRS (in the link above) is only for patients who were employed continuously by the federal government since sometime in mid 1980s and didn’t opt to switch to the FERS & Thrift Savings Plan (FERS). All federal employees hired since mid 1980s are automatically only enrolled in the FERS plan and can’t opt into the CSRS plan.

Agree that the initial post is confusing. It’s hard to provide accurate info if you don’t clarify what you are meaning and whether the hypothetical employee is under the TSP or CSRS retirement plan, or something else.
