Suspended from my university

Hello,

I was suspended from my college in the fall of this year for using another student’s meal plan. At the time I was a sophomore. At the same time as my suspension I was also dealing with being disenrolled from Army ROTC due to hypothyroidism and monetary problems. To make things worse, one of the sanctions of my suspension was that I was allowed to have nothing to do with Greek Life. Because I lived in my Fraternity house I was forced to move. To put the icing on the cake, I was also charged by the Campus Police Department for misuse of a credit card, and was dealing with the criminal charges. Because of the monetary problems in conjunction with the court costs, fines and restitution set by the courts I was unable to pay the fines and fees issued by Judicial Affairs and finally I was unable to write the letter of apology to the person the card belonged to because of the terms of the bond set by the judge. Due to all of this stress I literally went into shut down mode and just completely ignored everything. Now, 6 months letter I am feeling the pinch of living in our economy with no college degree and am trying to get my life in order. I have received no official notice from the University stating that I was dismissed though the deadlines of the sanctions have all passed (my suspension will be up in August).

Basically my question is, where do I go from here? I want to finish my education at the University close to my home to be close to my family and my job but am afraid to apply.

PLEASE HELP!

When you say, “using another students meal plan”, you really mean I stole someones card and used their meal plan without them knowing, huh?

Or did the person give you permission? I highly doubt they did, or else the police wouldn’t be involved.

Anyways - if you want to go back to school then apply and see what happens.

If not, just go enlist, if you are still eligible.

You’re going to have to go speak with an adviser at your university. They can probably point you in the right direction regarding the terms of the suspension and re-enrollment. I don’t think you have to reapply to the university if you were suspended and not expelled/kicked out. I’m sorry that this is going to sound rude, but why the hell would you use another student’s meal plan? Hopefully you’ve learned your lesson :-/

The student was a pledge of our fraternity and told us that we could use it and just to grab it from his backpack, then when he didn’t get into the fraternity told the university that the 6 of us stole it and they bought it because he was an upstanding engineering student.

I’m not eligible. My thyroid was -9.9 out of place (hypothyroidism apparently runs in my family in conjunction with prolonged starving myself for wrestling, it lead to severe hypothyroidism) and is still not corrected, and even when it is there is a chance I will never be eligible for military service because of the severity of it being displaced.

^ Wow, that is really, really ****ty. I’m sure if you go talk to an adviser and explain the situation they will let you re-enroll.

you said “us” right? There’s your witness right there. Write a letter to the school or the President’s office and tell them and ask that they reconsider

The worse thing that could happen to you after applying to the other school is that they reject you, possibly because of the suspension. There’s nothing to really lose in that situation–excluding fees and such.

As someone said, you could possibly just re-enroll at the old school.

was the credit card thing related to the meal plan issue, or was that a different incident? It seems like using another person’s meal plan is not enough grounds for a suspension. Was there other offenses? I did something a lot worse than using someone’s meal plan and I was just placed on probation. Check the student handbook and make sure they had grounds to suspend you, appeal it, ask for a hearing. But is there more to the suspension than just the meal swipes?
I know at my school you are suspended on a semester basis, meaning you can re enroll after the suspension. Talk to someone from judicial affairs if you have questions.

No, it’s literally just the meal plan. Essentially I was charged twice for the same thing (once by the police, once by the university). I already appealed the decision and it did not work. I have a meeting with the University near my home’s admission’s office today. Hopefully they will tell me I’ll be okay and can just apply here.

Just try to start over and start fresh with the new U closer to home. Meet with admissions and with their Dean of Students and find out what you have to do to apply under the circumstances and what you would need to do prove yourself. You might start out on probation there. Just lay it all out on the table and ask if you can still be considered for admission. People make mistakes.

lol. I love how the people that are in charge of student affairs or these “incidents” rarely go after the real trouble makers and instead put so much energy in stupid things like meal plans. I know 2 people that had these hearings at my school, one was charged with “vandalizing” a vending machine (since he paid for his stuff and it wouldnt come out), the other charged with smoking pot outside the dorm and the security caught him. The first guy was put on “Disciplinary Probation” and had to pay restitution and the other guy just got a warning. I really thing college integrity affairs are a joke that cause so much unnecessary pain and hardship

Judicial affiars at case is kind of misguided.

@ tiff
very very true. sad part is that they dont even realize it
