During my sophomore year, I was suspended for 1 day.
I go to a catholic high school that utilizes iPads so that most textbooks and work are electronic. I left my iPad unattended and unlocked for a bit, which normally isn’t an issue. However, a classmate took my iPad and emailed a homework assignment to himself that he had not done. The teacher recognized the similar work and reported it to the dean. I explained the situation to the dean yet I was still suspended for plagerism. I had no control in this circumstance and was unaware of what was happening. The dean said that because this is a first offense, it will go off as a warning and won’t show on my record.
I am just worried that the suspension will still show on my record. And if it does, will it affect my application if I give a good explanation?
You had control by being careless about the security of the iPad.
Do not leave the iPad unlocked and unattended.
If the Dean said it won’t, I wouldn’t worry about it. Kids make mistakes.
Take the dean at his word, but check with your GC if you are concerned. Even if a college hears about this, they’d probably give you the benefit of the doubt because it isn’t obvious that you had anything to do with the actual plagerism. The worst they can for sure pin on you is leaving your iPad unlocked, which means very little in the grand scheme of things.
OTOH, hopefully you learned a lesson here, and all our students on these boards will take heed of your experience. You won’t get a second chance here, so make good choices going forward.
nah youre fine dont even worry about it
Something sounds fishy in this story. If someone stole your work and submitted it as their own, you did not commit plagiarism.
Probably abetting plagiarism.
But you say, “I was suspended” and that it was only a warning. To me, a warning wouldn’t have put you out of school for a day. If you mean it isn’t on your record, fine. But you need to check with the GC, who has to answer a discipline question on his or her paperwork to the colleges.
If it is on your record and the hs does disclose, it depends on how the GC words this and how you explain.
Your dean wants you to know that you should take security of your ipad seriously (and this is why) but that this is not a major infraction. Or they want you to know that even if you were the one who emailed the assignment that you are on notice not to do it again.
