Suspension or bad school record

How bad would it look if you got suspended for fighting or illegal drug use?

Drug use is a problem. Fighting can be explained. My son got into top colleges with a suspension AND an expulsion on his record- you have to handle it right, though. If the fighting is because you are dangerous to others and regularly beat people up, it’s a problem. If it was horsing around and wrestling, it’s a different story.

Suspensions are ok if there’s a good reason behind them. Drug use is not good at all. Cheating is the worst.

yeah, you could actually use suspensions to your advantage if you can show how you’ve changed and what you’ve learned.

I disagree. Many people experiment with drugs. It is a natural human desire to alter one’s consciousness. Regular drug use/abuse could definitely be detrimental to learning, but I would not automatically write a kid off because of drugs. Violent behavior seems to me harder to justify. Violence is one of the most negative aspects of drug use, but not all instances of drug use result in violence. Unless it is really just horseplay in the locker room, a fight at school is usually a pretty big problem.

See, what sucks is that drug use really isn’t all uncommon and a kid shouldn’t be punished for experimenting. But there are so many kids vying for so few spots that well, why take kid A who did drugs over kid B with approximately the same record who didn’t?

does it really say that on the transcripts that you were suspended, or in trouble, etc?..and does it have an explanation of why? i never knew this…good thing i never got in trouble

to 19382, while I do agree that drug use isn’t that uncommon due to experimentation, I still think that one should be punished if caught. Cheating is a pretty common occurence too, and few people rarely get caught doing it. So, it’s only fair that you have to punish the people doing these things, and even though there are thousands of people that don’t get caught for cheating or experimenting w/ drugs, it still doesn’t mean that it’s the right thing to do.

I don’t know about transcripts–every school is different. On the Common App, there is a question that asks if you have ever been suspended or expelled for any reason. This same question is listed on the school report for your guidance counselor to complete—so, it will be disclosed to colleges your experience with disciplinary issues—best advice, be honest and explain what you learned from your mistake

I received a one day suspension for cheating on my gym final. Everyone that was in that class in every hour did. I tried not to, but the older kids were pressuring me to and the teacher did not care because he just let the kids come up to me and tell me answers. One kid that cheated himself decided to tell his mom and everyone was suspended for a day.

Why did you pull up a three year old thread to tell everyone that?
