Swedish Student College Options?

Hi everyone,
So I have a friend visiting from Sweden who really really wants to attend a local college (we’re located in Memphis TN) for engineering. We have several colleges in the area including Christian Brothers University, University of Memphis, and Rhodes…the first two being pretty well respected for their engineering programs. However, he just took the October ACT and doesn’t think he did that well (he wanted a 27) of course it’ll be a few weeks before he knows for sure, but he highly doubts he got a 27 or anything close. He says this is this ACT score is his only chance to get into one of the local colleges. Is it really though? I’d like to kind of help him out if I can, but don’t know much when it comes to international student admissions. Are there any other ways he could still get into a local university?

Not sure why he’s aiming for 27, but I’m assuming he’s hoping for some financial aid or something. So also, are there any other ways for international students to receive financial aid?

Let’s not all rush at once (:

If you and your friend sit down with the college-matching search engines, you can run searches for places that do offer some financial aid to international students, and then you can check the websites or email the admissions offices to find out if he would be eligible for aid at that particular institution.

If he has a list of places that he is already interested in, he should email (or better yet telephone) the international admissions officers, and ask about his options.

For general information on the admissions process for international students, see https://www.educationusa.info/</a> For information specific to students educated in Sweden, contact one of the EducationUSA advising centers there: https://www.educationusa.info/Sweden</a></p>

Thanks happymomof1! Will let him know.

While he’s in town, have him go to the local schools and talk directly with admissions folks about his situation. I don’t know about Univ. of Memphis, but Rhode and Christian Brothers would be happy to give him honest answers about financial aid and show him their campuses.

You should be aware that Rhodes itself has no engineering program. As to Memphis or Christian Brothers, a 27 ACT would actually be on their high end and enough to get some scholarship money if grades also good, see, e.g., [Admissions :: Non-Resident Scholarship :: University of Memphis](http://www.memphis.edu/admissions/nonres_scholarship.php). However, for many colleges with engineering it would be something close to what is average or low and likely out of the scholarship group.
