Another audition question (see how I’m staying out of this LOL). S played Vittorio Vidal in Sweet Charity his Sophomore year in HS. I asked him why he isn’t considering using “Too Many Tomorrows” as an audition song and he said “because of the accent”. Is this true? Should he avoid songs with any type of accent, I never really noticed that song being sung with a heavy accent other than from the original cast.

I don’t think it would be a problem as long as you didn’t sing with the accent. Go ahead and sing the song! Just use your normal voice. That’s just like with monologues- even Shakespeare. They want to hear your voice even if it’s originally done in an accent.

The character of Vittorio Vidal is 30-45 years old, which is pretty far beyond the recommended age of 18-25 for a recent high school graduate auditioning for college programs. Remember, college faculty are experts in the Broadway Canon and expect you to act the song in the context of the show.

Here is a quote from kjgc, an MT department head:

The quote above is from this thread, which you may find of interest - it talks about some of the problems in finding an appropriate audition song for a baritone:

Here is another thread that discusses appropriate audition material with a great post by kgjc (see post #16):

Most people don’t want the audition panel wondering, “why did he/she choose THAT song?” instead of focusing on your work in the very brief moment in time alloted for the audition.

There are many past threads that discuss audition song choices - searching for “audition song” or “overdone song” will produce lots of threads that discuss these and other audition topics (it helps to use the “Advance Search” mode and limit the search to “Musical Theatre Major” under “Search in Forum(s)”).

You may also want to read one of the many books on auditioning, such as, “The Enraged Accompanist’s Guide to the Perfect Audition” by Andrew Gerle.

Ahh…good point on Vittorio on the age.

Thanks Emsdad!

I may be in the minority, but I think song and monologue choices are very personal. It’s difficult, if not impossible, for people on a relatively anonymous forum such as this to suggest songs or comment on the appropriateness of certain songs for a particular auditioner. We hired MTCA to assist us with song and monologue choice, and I have to say that they spent a lot of time getting to know my D and choosing perfect material for her. These particular songs and monologues would not necessarily be perfect for anyone else, even someone with the same voice type. I know this can be done without coaches, but for us it made it worlds easier. I guess my point is that you need to pick material that is not only vocally right, and age appropriate, but right for your son as a person and performer. And since we don’t know him, it is really hard to help with that (beyond advising on whether a song is overdone or not age appropriate).

Thanks monkey13- I get that. S has spent many hourssearching through material…for some reason we have to keep reminding each other of “age appropriate”. I wish we would have started this intensive research last year, I had no idea there were so many “rules” with college auditions. I can’t afford a audition coach. He has a great vocal coach but it doesn’t seem college auditions are her area of expertise either. He’ll figure it out, I know he will. This site has helped me immensely.
