Some guy named Ezra Cornell used to swim the Yangtze River… so as a tribute to him, Cornell decided to give a mandatory swim test.

Wait… I’m confused now… they might’ve named something after him instead. Oh wells.

i’m gonna doggie paddle my way down the test

Really? That’s interesting. I wonder if they do that in Doha, Qatar too. I do know they have 2 swimming pools that are seperated…but that’s it. I have a pool, but I don’t like to swim anymore. :(

I’m planning to almost drown myself for the first half to put the lifeguards on the edges of their seats (and maybe even hop in the pool), and then break into a smooth front crawl…is that a bad idea?

me too, meg! haha :)

nah the swim test is like from World War II, when guys were being drafted, or so I thought

everyone should be able to swim ne ways, it’s just a good skill to have

i thought the swim test had something to do with WWII and then they just stuck with it after the war ended

you’re all wrong…its so newly arrived freshman can see each other in their bathing suits- sorta expedites the “hooking up” process, thereby improving the quality of life on campus :D

someone ask uncle ezra

I find that kinda strange, because girls and guys take it seperately

o…nevermind then :p

hahaha, for a moment there i thought i was being quite clever…guess not :)

do they make exceptions if we cant get our hair wet???

I’m planning to apply to Cornell next year…but I can’t swim! I’ll have to resort to those floaty things :D

you’re from an area called “South Bay” and can’t swim??? lol, how’d that happen?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=17026

I’m from the Bay Area (San Francisco Bay Area), and the southern part’s called the South Bay (obviously). Besides, the water’s too contaminated to take a quick swim in…

it began during World War II, because so many students were going off to fight, and it was deemed a necessary skill to have. After the war ended, the swim test remained. It is a graduation requirement as voted on by the University Faculty. Several years ago it came up for renewal and was reaffirmed by the faculty.

i was right

I bet Wharf would know the whole story…

isn’t there a dive involved too?
