Swimming Recruiting for Int’l Jr. Targeting Highly Selective Colleges

Having lived in New England for 8 years for school, my data point of one is that I’d not be OK with it. I have never been so cold in my life as when I visited Montreal

It looks like most of these Brown look-a-likes have slow swim teams…when are the RD application deadlines?

To whom are you directing this question? OP has repeatedly stated that the D is limited to 10 apps (UCs count as 1) and I believe all 10 slots were spoken for according to post #2007. As we are very close to most RD dates, I expect all apps are in or close to it and transcripts already requested. Further the D likely has limited access, if any, to the school counselors to change the list prior to RD deadlines.

List is final. 1 ED reject + 2 Canada + 5 UCs + 1 EA + 1 ED2 + 4 RD= 13 schools.

Announcements will be made in due course, starting in February.

Happy New Year!

D24 received a late reach out from a school where she had passed pre read (after Christmas, probably after another recruit dropped out), and had to choose between two D3 coaches/schools. She committed to apply as a D3 swim recruit with full coach support, which is a joyous time of celebration. She will join her friends who have gained admission to US Colleges (Caltech, Stanford, Harvard, and Williams)… With a hook.

Thanks to the long list of posters who have contributed to her journey, and informed her of the many regulations, unspoken rules, and intricacies of college sports recruiting over the past 12 months.

Key takeaways from this journey / thread are:

  • cc is a great source of experience and general support, but information has to be carefully digested with a grain of salt, and direct communication with coaches remains the best reference point

  • when approaching athletic recruiting, it is very important that athletes/families carefully build their college lists. college is ultimately about education, preference and fit.

  • in D24’s case, whilst recruiting was a clear objective, academics came first, and attending a women’s college was not considered even where she had the required times to be a recruit and coaches reached out (Wellesley, Bryn Mawr)

  • The summer between Sophomore & Junior year is the ideal time for contacting coaches. But Christmas or Q1 isn’t too late for most D3 schools

  • International swimmers can draw a very significant advantage from swimming/competing in the US during the summer between Sophomore & Junior Year (and even the summer between Junior and Senior year) ideally with an actively recognized US team, and posting their times through swimcloud and/or the NCSA platform.

  • when possible, college tours and coach visits can fundamentally impact an applicant’s perspective on the vibe of coach/team/school

** Please do not ask at which school D24’s being recruited

I have no idea what this means. She is going to swim at either Caltech, Stanford, Harvard, or Williams? Presumably not, so I assume the meaning is that she will be attending college in the U.S.

Regardless of the semantics, so very happy that your D24 is excited about her offer.

Congratulations to the OP’s daughter!

We will leave this thread open for another day for users to post their good wishes and then the thread will be permanently closed.

D24 very excited but anxious to receive her formal admit letter and avoid any unexpected surprise.

Congratulations to your D, and you are right, the wait/stress/uncertainty isn’t over until the acceptance letter is in hand. Is she applying ED2 or RD?

I think it may be premature to close this thread and to celebrate before an acceptance letter is actually received.

Even those who receive Likely Letters from Ivies tend to wait until the actual December 15 acceptances come out before fully relaxing and breaking out the champagne.

We know that the OP was rejected ED from Brown, so the ED option is no longer an advantage from a recruiting perspective. The OP claims to have coach support from a D3 program (no mention of NESCAC). Is this from a school from “the list” meaning, was it a school she already applied to, or is a new application necessary? If a new application, does the school offer ED2?

Applying ED2 with an athletic hook is an advantage.

If there is no ED2, it is probably worth leaving all the RD applications in place before all acceptances are known.

My worry is, if a D3 coach is making an offer after the ED advantage has passed, what happened? Did the coach try to get another recruit in for ED and the AO didn’t come thru? If so, how good is this coach’s current offer?

Its not over until it is over…

Congrats on the support from the coach, and definitely wise to wait until the acceptance letter is in hand. I counseled my son to fill out his application and give all seriousness to the process as if he was an unhooked applicant, and to begin his other applications in case anything went awry.

He also waited until the acceptance from the admissions office came to post anything on social media (big thing in his sport…), and he had a friend who had passed the pre read and was offered support from a coach, but was not accepted ED1. Fortunately his buddy still had interest from other NESCAC schools and was accepted elsewhere ED2.

And fingers crossed for excellent news in the future for your daughter!

Agree 100% about the need to wait until accepted, even with coach support.

My daughter applied with full coach support in the ED round in august and did not announce to anyone other then to call coaches at other schools and let them know she applied ED. Once she had a formal acceptance and we had full financial package she announced on social media and attended signing day.

Just making sure…OP is aware that under ED2, a positive admission decision in February means ALL other applications must be immediately withdrawn? You won’t be able to delay accepting the offer by claiming the financial package is insufficient if you have not applied for FA.

Dartmouth/Cornell/Stanford/Berkeley will all be off the table.

Congratulations on… what I am assuming is a commitment from a coach for admissions support in the ED2 round? It’s unclear. Make sure you know their record for getting supported athletes admitted in this round before committing.

It’s also unclear what you mean by the second D3 school since I thought the previous recruiting offers on the table had been declined? Was this second one something like “there is a roster sort or walk-on opportunity if you get in on your own in the ED2 or RD round”?

As far as this advice…

…I don’t think you have provided any information that warrants this claim. In this case, the U.S events entered were 1) in the long course meters (LCM) summer season so didn’t provide short course yards (SCY) times that U.S. college coaches want to see, and 2) were slower than times in the previous season. I didn’t see how that would have provided a “significant advantage.”

In a timed individual sport like swimming, direct comparison of times to existing roster times is probably the best shortcut to quickly to determining levels of programs to target. I think if you shared how your D24’s personal best times in her top two or three events compare to the roster of the program with the apparent ED2 offer, that would be more useful for future thread readers than some of the advice provided. I’d say it’s very likely that the times would rank #4 or better range.

Swimming in the US and registering in platforms is what enabled coaches who didn’t know her to identify her from a database, and contact her by email. She received 30+ such coach emails, which did include 2 women’s colleges which would rank in the T5 women’s colleges.

D24 has diligently filled all her applications, since she doesn’t have an admission letter in hand, and accidents can happen.

She’s busy with training and exams, and of course a bit anxious like all her classmates who don’t have an admit letter in hand.

…schools which, had she been interested in any of them in the first place, would have already have known who she was and what her times were from her contacting them.
