Sounds like to me she is applying to School #1 either ED2/RD using coach support as her hook while trying to get coach support from School #2 in the next few days. Then potentially if School #2 pans out, she will be applying to two schools with full coach support.
Our college guidance counselor would be losing her mind if we tried to get away with these antics.
If true, in IMO, even more ethically fraught.
It is interesting how many people read this differently - here is my take: Swimmer passed preread earlier this year and preferred a different school and told coach they were not her top choice. Preferred school (s) didn’t make an offer and now original school/coach came back asking if now interested in pursuing. One school - one offer - may or may not be an ED2 school or only RD. Poster seemed clear that all other apps stay in until the offer/acceptance is firm - which makes sense either ED2 or RD. I was not confused at all until I read all the other interpretations - making me think I misunderstand - just wish this student swimmer the best, as the journey has been long.
@NiVo Can you please clarify?
There are astute posters who have been following this thread for close to a year wondering what is going on.
It is possible to be more forthcoming without revealing vital information.
Thank you.
This was my reading as well. Although I think the reference to waiting for a “firm offer” is what has confused many. I interpreted it to mean a formal acceptance, but I can see how using the word “offer” to mean very different things could lead to confusion. I do think there has been some confusion due to language/usage in this thread and this might be another example.
Not sure what is correct but wishing the best for everyone.
OP, unless the friends wanted their college recruiting details posted publicly (“with hooks”) I’d consider deleting their details as it doesn’t add much and could anger some of them.
D24 committed to one coach/one team/one school with pre-read & full coach support & AD support. She’s kept and filed all the applications to all the other schools in her list, and informed the coach of it, simply because she doesn’t have an acceptance letter in hand, and accidents have happened in the past to recruited athlete/applicants who failed to be admitted to many different schools. She doesn’t expect that to happen, her grades have not weakened, she’s not awaiting financial aid, but she just wants to diligently complete her application process and have safety/fallback options in case there is an “accident”.
Of course, kids can change their mind, but her process had been pretty consistent throughout, and she’s been clear with the coach throughout her journey.
What about the other school where “She’s hopeful to be recruited with full coach support”?
Is there a commitment to apply ED2 to the first school? If not, what does the commitment actually consist of? (Is there an outstanding ED2 submitted somewhere else, for example?)
This is the statement that tripped me up. IMO, the OP inferred there was a second school in play - and that they were hopeful to get full coach support.
Then why didn’t she ED 1 at that school like most committed athletes do?
From back in early May, advice that may be relevant, especially given that one of the relatively weaker programs circled back when a spot opened up.
I got the impression that full coach support didn’t happen until after Christmas (so the last few days) thus after the ED1 deadline. That was my read, but who knows.
This suggests that the offer of support was made several months ago, or at least that was our experience. Maybe I missed something.
Assuming I’m interpreting you correctly, I’m glad to hear she’s “committed to the application process” at one school/program. It’s always prudent to have a backup plan, as long as the backup plan knows that you’ve committed elsewhere or you don’t dump committed school for backup school down the line. Congrats to your daughter!
This is what I was basing the post Christmas offer on.
This thread is a perfect example of bias and preconceived ideas - with many posters reading into things. OP was clear their child applied ED to their favorite school even with no swimming. The current school in play came back after ED rejection inquiring if the student is still available and would be interested in pursuing this opportunity. Not uncommon at all in recruiting (based on our own experience with a timed sport) and OP
is doing it all correctly - we don’t know if the offer school even had ED2 - so until an official acceptance is in hand - all
is still in play.
If the committed school can not offer you a likely letter - and it is now the RD round - anything can happen from
the coach quitting to the recruit getting another offer. For many sports - things still move in RD and even summer after graduation (rare - but happens) resulting in a lost deposit and a school change/late application. At my daughter’s school (Ivy) several recruits come in every year in the RD round - zero walk-ons. Why not at ED with a likely - no clue. They are strong students and athletes and are great additions to the team.
Thanks. This thread is a hot mess. Good luck to the OP’s daughter.
