Switching Before Freshman Year

During the Spring, I was admitted to Washington University in St Louis and I decided to matriculate there because that was my dream school. Also, I live in Michigan, and as all Michiganders do, I applied to University of Michigan and also got in there.

It is way past matriculation deadline and now, with a little over a month left before Freshman year starts, my father was laid off from his job and we are left with very little money.

So considering this financial road block that we hit, I’ve been wondering if I could just enroll at University of Michigan instead, because as an in-state college, the overall cost of going there will be less.

With just a little over a month left before the school year starts, is it possible to switch enrollment from WashU to Michigan? Do I still have the time to go to orientation, register for classes, find a dorm room? If I do, then what do I need to do?

In big trouble, and would really appreciate the help. Thanks

Contact the financial aid office at WashU

Do you know that Michigan will still take you? Most state schools are pretty full this year. If they would, you might have fewer housing options but it would be quite possible.

But do ask WUSTL financial aid for a ‘professional judgment’ because of your family’s situation. They may or may not increase your aid depending on overall assets and other things, but it’s worth a shot.

Well I live in Ann Arbor, so housing really wouldn’t be a problem. Worst comes to worst, then I’ll attend from home.

I’ve been accepted to Michigan, but hmom5, as you’ve said, state schools must be very full this year. Hopefully they aren’t so full to turn me away if the financial aid office at WashU cannot help.

Thanks for the suggestions! Please keep them coming, I could use more ideas to pitch to my parents. I appreciate it very much!
