Switching Industry: Starting Salary for Engineer with Software Developer & Math background?

Quick backstory. I’ve been a Software Developer, in the field for over 12 years. Having never gone after high school, I decided to get my Bachelor’s degree at the age of 25. Since I was going back so late (my opinion), I wanted to go back for a more than just a Business or Liberal Arts degree, and majored in Applied Mathematics. Due to be sole breadwinner and not going into debt, this degree has taken quite some time. I’m now 32, a Software Engineer, and wrapping up the Math Degree. Now what?

I can either get a M.S. in Applied Math and Computer Science, but I’m feeling bored/burned out from the Software field. I’ve recently become very interested in Engineering, namely Chemical and Materials ( I want to work with improving Batteries, nanotubes, etc). I know it means more school which is not a problem, however, I make a good salary now (80k). I know to expect a pay cut once I start in the engineering field, but what are the job and salary prospects for a mid 30s entry engineer, with a Software and Math background? Am I just chasing my tail?
