I went into Penn State thinking I was going to major in Biotechnology and go on to Med school or even PA school. The first semester went by and I did not get the 3.7+ GPA I had hoped for. I got a 3.53. Now that I’m almost done with my second semester it looks like I’m going to get an even lower GPA. General chem II is beating the crap out of me. I’m either going to get a D or a low C. I doubt I’d get anywhere close to getting into any medical or PA school with a grade like that on my transcript. This is just part of the reason I’m thinking about switching majors.
The second reason is that I hate chemistry at penn state. I dread going to chem lecture and lab. It’s so so so boring and unnecessarily difficult. If I choose to keep on going and just hoping for the best when I apply to medical school, I have to take even more chemistry (Org. chem & Biochem). And from what I hear these classes are some of the hardest.
I’m also not sure if I want to be in school until my early 30s.
The reason I’m thinking about Math or Statistics is because there are many different career options and they all pay fairly well.
I’ve never taken a statistics course and I am not amazing at math. I consider myself average. I took Calc. 1 last semester and I am taking Calc 2 this semester. I got a B+ in calc 1 and I should be getting a B in calc 2. These aren’t the best grades, but I’ve grown to enjoy these 2 classes. I’m never bored to death and I’m constantly applying what I learn so it’s hard to forget material after learning it. In general I find the stuff I learn in math pretty interesting.
So should I switch my major? I’d appreciate it if I could hear back from as many people as possible. I don’t want to end up regretting my decision.
