Hello, and thank you for taking the time to read my post. I am a Junior in college, just transferred this semester to Chico State. I took a hiatus from school for a few years and I am now back to finish my degree at age 23. I am a Communication major with an emphasis on Public Relations. I have been preforming well in my major, and I have strong communication and public speeking skills, but I am doubting whether or not this is the right major for me. I know that I can make a decent living with a Communications degree and it is also very broad which appeals to me. My problem is that my true passion lies with plants. I have worked in plant nurseries for more than six years and I love plant identification, growing things, and sharing my knowledge with others. I am considering a major change, but I know that there is not as much money to be made in this feild compared to Communications. I also think there may be fewer jobs. I have been asking family and friends for advice and have gotten mixed reviews. Some of them say that I should do the practical thing and stick with Communications because I have already done a lot of the work towards the degree and it is a broader feild (where I can keep plants as a hobby). Others have told me to follow my passion and pursue a degree where I will be working with plants. Any thoughts or advice on this matter?

My tendency is to agree with those who say stick with communications and have plants as a hobby. This is by no means a dismissal of the other point of view. But there is no reason why you can’t be a communications major and with firms that could use your plant knowledge. If you do that perhaps a minor in plant science.

Is there a particular program of study at Chico which you would pursue on the plant side?
