We are planning a graduation trip for our family and were planning on England, France and Spain, but the idea of England, France and Switzerland has come up. We could either drive or take a train from Paris, and we would have 5-7 days in Switzerland. suggestions, thoughts, itineraries for Switzerland? Neither H nor I have been there. The trip would be in July of next year.

(we have our itineraries for England and France)

Skip it and save it for another trip. Spend more time in England and France. Enjoy the luxury of slow travel. Savor the journey.

(DH just got back from two weeks in the Swiss/French alps, bicycling. He had a nice time. But he spent almost the entire time in one small region. We’ve found, over the years, that less is MUCH more when traveling.)

Every summer for about the last 8 years, I’ve planned a trip to Switzerland for us. And every summer for some reason, we can’t do it. Last summer I even got to the point of making airline reservations. Switzerland in July would be amazing if you were into hiking. I’d stay at a mountain village, or somewhere in Zermatt, Grindlewald, Chamonix or Murren, and hit the trails from there. They are supposedly nice trails, well marked, train travel will get you everywhere. But it could be a problem if you are trying to cover too much ground, like dmd said…and sometimes kids are complainers about hiking. Maybe more of a trip for just adults. But hiking during the day, staying in a quaint ski village at night, with wine and hot tubs…sounds good to me.

If you are looking for a great group tour, ricksteves.com has excellent tours that cover many places in Europe. I know people that have taken them, and they do all the work for you, the tours are very active, small groups, people who are adventurous with good attitudes, off the beaten path stuff. In fact, they sound so good, I’d like to do one next summer. (Like that’s ever going to happen!)

my family and i went to france and switzerland in june a couple of years ago. we did 8 days in Paris and then 7 days in Geneva. We stayed at a small hotel in paris and then to a the TGV train to the Evian resort on Lake Geneva. It was a great trip.

i also agree that you should focus your time in england and france, and then visit switzerland for a a few days
