My son is suffering now that his college has gone fully remote and he’s sitting all day on the small wooden desk chair. I just got a nice desk chair from Staples for myself at work, and suggested that for him, but am not sure it will fit him --6’5", 38" pant leg inseam. I sent him a link to suggestions of desk chairs for tall people, but he says all the suggested chairs cost $400 or more, whereas my Staples chair was $120. Can anyone recommend an affordable chair for someone this size?
Have him try out the work chair to see if it fits for him.
Either bring it home one evening (and bring it back the next day), or have him come to the front door or parking lot of your work while you bring the chair out for him to try.
I work from home. I have spent over $700 for an office chair, but this chair is just as comfortable if not better and it is only $175 now. My daughter recommended this to me and she also loves it. I am a small person, but it is big enough for a man.
My tall son loves this chair (can also be ordered with arms)

My son is 6’2". He had been working at his dining room table, but when he switched apartments had a dedicated office room. He got a desk, and wanted an office chair with head support. I was up and down the interwebs hunting for him. In the end, he picked this chair and is satisfied:

I would but he’s 5 hours from here…
Check out Costco online. DH has been very pleased with his. He is average height, but it also adjusts. His is a mesh type chair for approx. $120 - 140, but they have a variety. Also a great return policy.
You can have him measure from the inside of his bent knee to the floor and compare that with how high the chair can be adjusted to see if it has the range to adjust to wherever he is likely to want it.
