Synthesis Reactions-- CHEMISTRY

How do you know which form of an ion to use?

for example, a question says ‘mercury and bromine react in a synthesis reaction’

so the left side of the reaction is “Hg + Br2-----> ___________”

How do i know whether i should use Mercury(I) or Mercury(II)? Shouldn’t it specify or is there some rule of thumb i’m missing?

For AP Chemistry, in general, I don’t think it matters which form of any cation you use as long as you use it correctly (and you balance the equation, of course).

When in doubt, use the most common cation (Hg II).
