Has anyone heard aboout be moved fromthe waitlist?
I can speak to 30 years ago when I attended, but I also did ask one of the tour guides at admitted students day as well this week.
She confirmed what I thought. The dorms you would probably choose last (unless I guess your chosen LLC is in there if you are doing one) is BBB⊠Brewster/Boland, and I forget the newer hallâs name. They are just way out on the edge of campus right above the highway.
When I went there most kids desired to live up on the mount in Day/Flint. LLCs which did not exist back then have probably changed the dynamics some.
@jeb3 Congrats!! Would you mind sharing the stats? Trying to get a sense of what Syracuse looks for in leadership scholar award. Thank you!
4.0UW/4.8W, 34ACT, 11APâs, Strong ECâs and LOR
They canât choose their dorm , just their roommate and if they prefer split double or open double. Most freshman will end up on the mount or in BBB. BBB is pretty old and a bit farther out and they will be bummed. Eventually they come to love BBB, itâs really social and the kids there really do end up loving it
Yes, I am aware, my daughter enrolled the end of last week.
We used to be able to list choices way back when. Some will also end up in Lawrenson next to the dome. Sadler has become the Honors dorm. BBB is no different than any of the others, they definitely have fun with their peersâŠits the location. Always was the location, I had plenty of friends that lived there. They will all move up the food chain sophomore yearâŠlol.
I think it may depend on the size of the individual college. I know the asst. dean of architecture told the group on an admitted day that they had over 2000 applicants and I believe they admit about 24-25%, which would be 480-500 roughly and of those admitted they have 50 leadership scholarships to give out. Obviously, not all 50 are going to end up committing. They shoot for a freshman yield of 150-160âŠ
I could well be wrong but I suspect the 50 leadership scholarships are across the full program (all years). The full Architecture class is ~750 students. BArch programs have a 50-60% attrition rate from incoming to graduation (this is my own number based on looking at a few schools and their incoming class versus graduation numbers).
That would imply a Freshman Architecture class of 210-220 students and about a 45% yield from your 480-500 number. Also guessing that those students that got leadership scholarships are more inclined to commit so lets call it 50% of those awarded attend. Giving out 50/year would suggest 25 incoming students (of a class of ~215) have a leadership scholarship. Seems high to me that 10-15% of the class would have that scholarship.
If they said âWe have 50 scholarships to give out to the incoming classâ then I would take them at their word. If they left out the second part of that I would be suspect.
D25 received a Leadership 1/2 tuition scholarship for Falk College; she applied Test Optional with lots of ECs, Leadership program grad; varsity captain; rigorous HS coursework and Associate degree earned through dual enrollment; unique and substantial community/civic engagement in the Arts. She declined her acceptance at SU but the leadership award made SU a serious contender against some of her other acceptances. Wanted to share her profile since sheâs not a super high stat/score student relative to some of these boards.
No, she was very specific as to numbers and I also had a separate conversation with her later in the day. She implied that they do lose a few due to major change or transfers but that their attrition rate is higher than other Barch programs and they gain some transfers as well that come from other schoolâs Barch programs (you cannot transfer in from another major). They try to keep the program to 150-160 freshman enrolled. So 480-500 accepted receive one of 50 leadership scholarships would be 10% of accepted. I think their yield is more like 30-32% if they shoot for a max of 160 freshman and I dont know that 50% of those LS recipients necessarily enroll as they have most likely been accepted to several highly ranked programs to choose from. She did say 50 scholarships to give out to admitted freshman Barch class but suspect the yield of the recipients more closely matches the over all yield from their accepted pool of 30-32%. So that would be more like 15 enrolled freshman which seems accurate to me.
Unfortunately Syracuse is pretty tight with their statistics so thereâs no real way to validate anything theyâre saying though - at least in terms of admits and attrition (canât even find out how many BArch graduates they have in a year).
While Syracuseâs BArch is very well regarded/ranked and likely to maybe draw students more dedicated to staying in the BArch program itâs also well regarded because itâs a very demanding program. Net net I suspect their attrition isnât much different than other schools (again, they give no real numbers to validate/refute).
The numbers you outline still suggest that ~10% of the students (15 of 150) would be there on a LS. Seems high⊠but thatâs just meâŠ
I dont know. Iâm giving you numbers that were stated to us directly from the assistant dean⊠I agree with you as far as published data online.
Right - I heard the same numbers 3 years ago⊠I believe in âTrust but Verifyâ and when I canât verify it reduces the level of trust I have. ![]()
Very good program no doubt about it. Vittoria has been there a while and does a great job with their new student intake and information programs.
Does the Engineering school offer the Leadership 1/2 tuition scholarship? I may be missing something but I havenât noticed any engineering students posting about it?
Yes my engineering son has that scholarship. Thereâs a decent sized group of them (they all took a 1-credit seminar together their first semester).
@collegeboundin25 which college did your D25 end up choosing? we are trying to sort out the choices in our end. thanks
She chose Pitt! Sheâs a health science major and while she really liked SU she wanted more urban and liked being able to have walking distance access to hospitals and research opportunities in Oakland with UPMC etc. Weâre in state and she also received merit at Pitt so even with the Leadership 1/2 tuition award SU was nearly double Pittâs COA for her. Good luck with your final choices!
S25 was admitted off the waitlist to Maxwell two days ago. Still no financial aid award in the portal, and the five day window is down to three days. How long did it take others to see FA in MySlice?
Syracuse upped merit aid for S25 but itâs still 12k year more than our in-state. We didnât get a chance to tour but the school is Newhouse and their alumni network is supposed to be strong. Is it worth 12k more/year?
Which in-state? Assuming your name implies youâre in Northern California also include the cost to fly your son back and forth 3-4 times/year and any other travel type costs.
Look at the rate of cost increases for both schools the last couple of years. Merit isnât going to increase over the 4 years so that $12K gap for year one is likely going to be $20-$25K by year 4.
That said, if youâre looking at $60-$80K cost difference total it doesnât take much from an earnings opportunity to make up that difference over the career if you feel Newhouse might provide better occupational outcomes for your son. I wouldnât suggest anyone go into that much debt to fund the education but if it doesnât make for hardship on the family it could be worth it.
