Syracuse Drama Update

Just wanted to share a few things I learned at Parent Weekend this past weekend. Class of 2013 official numbers:

19 students currently in MT BFA
26 students currently in acting BFA

They wanted to yield 20 and 20 but this is how the numbers turned out. There is still a push to continue to reduce admissions numbers over the next few years and have fewer kids in the program. Over 800 auditioned for the Class of 2013.

Also, for those who know the faculty, Kim Hale, one of the dance teachers, is resigning at the end of this semester to return to NYC to perform professionally.

From the Class of 2009 (just graduated): One young man was recently cast in West Side Story on Broadway in the ensemble. Another young man was recently cast in Shrek on Broadway in the ensemble. Interestingly, the young man cast in Shrek was not selected for the senior showcase this year – so there’s some hope for kids who do not audition into the showcase for schools that do it this way.

Also, from the Class of 2010 (so he is leaving school for a bit), a young man was cast in the national tour of Cats in the ensemble.

I can tell you this – the boys at Syracuse can DANCE!!! I just saw the SU Drama production of Oklahoma over the weekend and the dancers are terrific, especially the men.

That’s what I know. Just thought I’d share for those looking at Syracuse.

Just to add what NewbieMTMom wrote, there were 7 freshmen in stage management this year. I don’t know the number for design/tech.
And she is so right about the caliber of dancing especially for those young men!

As with many BFA programs, I bet there are more graduates from Syracuse’s most recent classes who are working professionally. My D (who did not go to Syracuse) is currently on an Equity National Tour with a Syracuse BFA graduate from the Class of 2009 and another Syracuse MTer from the Class of 2008.

My daughter is part of the freshman Syracuse MT class. I think the reason why there are only 9 girls in that class, instead of 10 is that one of them was cast in August for the touring cast of “Legally Blonde.” My daughter had “met” all of her fellow classmates on Facebook & that’s where I’m getting my information from. Two months in, I can tell you the program is exceeding all expectations we had, the training is excellent & well-balanced.
