Syracuse RD Class of 2023

@wal221 If I had to venture to guess, due to your son’s stats, I would guess that your son was yield protected. So I would take it as a he was too good for Syracuse rather than he wasn’t good enough.

Any acceptances this round??

Does anyone know if the next round will be rejections/acceptances or more waistlists?

Waitlisted to Newhouse/Whitman Dual

Waitlisted Whitman 3.4 gpa 1460 SAT many extracurriculars
Anyone else from Whitman hear back yet?
Also what is likelihood that one gets taken off of waitlist? Is it high because many likely will not be able to afford high cost of attendance without significant merit/financial aid? And when do people who are taken off the waitlist usually informed of this?

D was also waitlisted for Newhouse. I am completely over Syracuse at this point. I feel like the way they handle admissions is heartless.

My son was waitlisted today to two colleges to which he did not apply…Arts and science and Maxwell. My husband and I are both alumni. My older son is a sophomore at SU. This son’s stats are very good, but I see other rejections/waitlists here who are better. From what I can discern, and from the wording in the letter, I believe they were letting him down easy and plopping him someplace where he has no interest. (It’s still fresh, so Im not sure if Im grateful for this or not?) I do not think he has a realistic chance of being accepted down the road. I’m commenting as a reference to others in our situation and for future applicants. I know how valuable input here can be. Good luck to everyone. It can be a rough time, but I hope everyone finds a place where he/she is wanted and valued…not a place where he/she has to beg and wait.

my daughter is sad to have been waitlisted to Newhouse… judging from Naviance one of the few from her school to not get in, ever. SAT 1420, 4.0uw, 4.97w, anchors school news, design editor of school paper, works pt job, dances 6 days/week. She has managed to keep her grades up while dancing 17+ hours a week and is really discouraged. She does have options but this whole thing is really beyond awful.

p.s. Is there a way to get feedback or an explanation? Quite literally she stands out on the positive end of naviance amongst green checkmarks. Thought maybe it was yield management but kids she knows with higher stats (and lower stats) from her school got in this year.

?

@Clairenola we got waitlisted too to Newhouse. 1400 SAT, 4.4 weighted, works as a video editor for a YouTube like channel, in Tech Theatre and bunch of ECs. You have to remember Naviance collects data only from your school and it is years worth. Also you don’t know if what schools those kids applied to. Also many kids don’t report rejections after waitlist or rejections at all do the data isn’t exact. Schools like Newhouse take only about 400 of the 5,000 applications they get…

D Redirected and waitlisted to arts and sciences. Thought she would get in for sure. Others in her school with lower stats got in

There are so many reasons why someone with lower stats than you might have gotten in: an essay that struck a chord with someone in admissions, a niche talent (athletics, uncommon instrument, etc) that the school wanted, they applied to a less competitive major, quality of HS itself and of HS coursework, grade trends, racial, gender, or geographical diversity, yield protection, money. Most of them are things you have little control over. If you know your/your student’s stats are good, the best thing to do is just move on and go to a school that appreciates what you have to offer. My son’s stats are lower than a lot of yours but we thought he would get into Syracuse. He has two schools that fit everything he wanted and who wanted him months ago. So he will choose one of them. I hope the same for all of you.

S waitlisted VPA, Transmedia, Film.
1260 SAT
3.4 GPA UW
Studied entire junior year in Spain.
Strong EC’s
Good recs.
Strong portfolio.

Got into Emerson for same. Looks like he’ll be going there. Good luck to all!

Two of my friends were accepted yesterday, March 22.

@Clairenola - my son’s gf was waitlisted too (I assume she applied to Newhouse). I don’t know her stats, but I know she’s a smart kid, yearbook editor, drum major (large public high school). It’s very discouraging. I don’t understand what’s going on. She was admitted to Emerson, but I don’t think that’s a viable option for them. It’s upsetting.

Accepted to iSchool
29 ACT
3.6 GPA UW
4 APs, 7 honors
President of NHS, started volunteer organization for fellow students, secretary of student council, varsity cheer

Posting this here for the benefit of all those who were just waitlisted and surprised by it. My son was in the exact same boat 2 years ago. Syracuse was his top choice school all along and he probably would have applied ED but we encouraged him not to and to keep his options open. He had a 1400 SAT, 95 GPA, lots of activities and sports and visited…but was waitlisted on the very last Friday of March. We were shocked and confused just like many of you are now. He ended up getting admitted off the waitlist approximately 10 days later. No merit money but a very generous FA package. He is now finishing up his Sophomore year in Whitman and is very happy there. He says he has spoken with tons of other students there who the exact same thing happened to… waitlisted and then admitted a very short time later - in some cases just a matter of days. It seems to be all kids with stats way above the average so perhaps it has something to do with yield protection. Or perhaps their Admissions department is just super disorganized and didn’t get to review all the applications in time? Either way it leaves a bad taste in your mouth, but he/we have been very happy with everything else about Syracuse since. Just wanted to let people know not to give up hope because the waitlists do seem to move or at least they did that year!
