I’m anti-fraternity/sorority so take this with a grain of salt but WHY do parents pay (in some cases, thousands of dollars) for their kids to belong to organizations like this?

I’m particularly sensitive about this right because because of my youngest kid who started at our state university this year. He wasn’t negative or positive about fraternities and had no strong feelings about it so he didn’t rush and didn’t think about it. But he’s a good-looking kid who’s also on one of the University’s well-known sports teams and he’s been invited to several fraternity parties…all good…then something happened 6 weeks ago and I’m not sure what. My easy-going kid has developed a visceral hatred towards fraternities. If I had to guess (and I don’t want to ask him about it), it’s likely because his first (only) serious girlfriend is black (we’re white) and while she’s at another school, something must have been said that was extremely offensive…and my kid would have been knocked back by that. And he’s fuming…so it must have been pretty bad. Makes me sick to think of it.

(Sigh) I really wish some of the life lessons we teach in school (for those who don’t get them from their parents/caretakers) were embraced - esp the fact that “All People are Created Equal” regardless of color, background, or whatever.

One would think anyone intelligent enough to get accepted into college could grasp that concept. It’s really sad that they don’t. Then they’re dumb enough (or drunk enough?) to post these things? One wishes the ACT/SAT could show levels of common sense intelligence.

I’m definitely not a sorority/fraternity fan either and glad my three lads followed in our (parent) footsteps that way. College is so much more.

This video made me sick to my stomach. I am also no fan of Fraternities and I was in a Sorority and H was in a Fratenity way back in the early 80’s. Some of you probably had good experiences but I know first hand how most of them were and apparently still are. I diligently railed to all of my kids about how much I loathed these organizations and fortunately it worked, none of them joined. One of my sons told me “why would I need to pay lots of money and humiliate myself to make friends.”

This is extremely disappointing. Theta Tau is a coed engineering fraternity. At many / most? schools it is not your typical IFC fraternity and more of a professional social fraternity.

Money isn’t everything.
I prefer my kids be decent people who make less money to what we see in the video.

Making a boatload of money is the least of our goals with college. So many things are more important than money. Perhaps that’s why some of us have different values than those in fraternities/sororities?

Or tries/wants to.

Truly disgusting. When did disgusting become acceptable? Oh, is hasn’t (or it shouldn’t).

Lots of articles in The Daily Orange on the subject:

@adadfromtheburbs Could you provide a link to that study?
Did you learn the snarkiness of your post #8 during your frat days?

Frats may have good qualities, but they certainly weren’t on display here.

@adadfromtheburbs What percentage of men accused of harassment in the workplace were fraternity members compared with non members.

The level of civility and compassion in our society seems to be declining at an alarming rate. I will say, however, that problems with fraternities are nothing new.

Yeah. Let’s get our broad brushes out. Give me a break people.

Totally tasteless attempt at humor in the skit (about a racist frat Tri Kappa, aka “KKK”). Not much different from a Lisa Lampanelli or Roast video on youtube or Comedy Central.

You would think that kids would know that once something is inline it will eventually leak out.

^Post 22: Oh, look–it’s deflection time!

Hard to imagine anyone downplaying this horrendous behavior. But here we are.

Not understanding why this is an outrage is part of the problem.

New member. Seven total posts. All to defend this. Gotta wonder who’s got a kid in a frat in Syracuse.
