SYTYCD Season 9

But of the girls who are left, they could choose 10 cute blondes with long hair…they could probably fill all 10 slots with blonde with long curly hair.

That one with the short platinum hair who was crying about not being able to get a job…my Ds and I had to laugh…does she think she’s the only one? How many people are there out there who would LOVE to dance for a living don’t or can’t?

Don’t want to be a spoiler…

but it was tough to watch that one guy go. He seemed so sweet about it. I bet his mother was waiting for Nigel in the parking garage at the end of the night.

Some standouts from the early auditions that are still around, and that I am convinced WILL make the final 20 for the live show are:

-The very first dancer featured (silent movie girl with the short bangs and amazing eyes–named amelia, I think)

-the girl with really curly hair who also danced with Cirque

-Cyrus (the only guy left from the hip hop guys from ATL)

-the two blond ballroom dancers from Salt Lake who are rooming together… I bet they do that thing where they bring them out together on “the Green Mile” and keep one and let the other go…

Those are the ones that come to my mind right now…

Did they keep the pole dancing ballerina?

I really disliked “silent movie girl”. I hope she doesn’t make it.

If belly dancing girl is still around (and I think she is), I think she will make it, then get cut when viewer voting starts. She seems to be a good dancer, but I think she will fall under the curse of the ballroom and her solos will be limiting after a while. For the life of me, I have never understood why the ballroom dancers cant use a partner when they are in the bottom two when they can during auditions. After all, we can only see that samba(?) move with a fringe dress so many times.

churchmusicmom, I agree with your predictions. Also think belly dancing girl will make it (if she’s still in the running) like MizzBEe. I felt like poor kicked-in-the-head girl was cheated out of a real chance and had been very good earlier (is she bacon girl?), and what about poor Joshua (that his name?) who knocked himself out and was rushed off to ER?

Yes, Bacon Girl was Kicked-in-the-Head Girl, and IMO she did well enough earlier to get through to the next round. I thought it was crappy of the judges not to take that into account. No good deed goes unpunished, I guess.

I’m sorry, but why is Cyrus still there? He’s amazing at what he does, but he only does one thing. I just hope the judges don’t continue to sacrifice superior dancers so that they can keep their b-boy.

I absolutely agree, but I think that is exactly what they are going to do. He will stay----already Nigel Lithgow and Adam Shankman have been tweeting about how great Cyrus is. Can’t imagine they’d do that if he’s not in the top 20.

He DID do remarkably well with choreography, considering he has never taken classes (supposedly), but it’s laughable that they’ve dismissed dancers for much smaller offenses. They just think Cyrus has what it takes to draw viewers in, I think. And I would watch to see how he does. Well, I would watch any way because I love the show…

Also, has anyone checked out the show Breaking Pointe on CW? They were allowed to bring cameras in to Ballet West for 6 weeks and follow their company members as they rehearsed for their Spring show…it’s quite fascinating. You can see full episodes online here:

It’s sometimes hard to remember that the judges (and the producers, who no doubt have influence on the decisions) are casting an entertainment show, not just picking the best dancers. A top twenty filled with Alexas would tank the ratings, while a Cyrus or two will spark interest. If talent were the only criterion, we wouldn’t be hearing all the sob stories, and they wouldn’t be making dancers choreograph the own pieces on zero sleep. (I particularly hate the no-sleep thing–I would think that dancing while exhausted is a recipe for injury.)

churchmusicmom, I’ve been watching Breaking Pointe from the beginning, and it IS fascinating.

Why did the producers feel like they needed Zoe Deschanel as a guest judge last night? Just to plug her show? She didn’t offer anything constructive at all. Even Cat Deeley pretty much acknowledged that much near the end there.

That aside, I enjoyed the guys more than the girls last night. Thought the baseball number was very clever.

I enjoyed all the pieces last night and this top 20 is filled with AMAZING dancers. Cyrus is, as he said, in for it but he held his own (in the back) with the other dancers last night in carefully choreographed pieces. It WILL be interesting to see how he does moving forward.

I was really surprised they kept BOTH the blond ballroom dancers AND both the brunette jazz dancers. Already I have them lumped together with each other and it will be interesting to see if they can distinguish themselves. It was also fascinating that the judges actually said that they were taking a chance this year and going with entertainment value over skill and technique in several instances (why they picked Amelia–silent film girl—over the other more consistent contemporary dancer), and they even went out of their way to highlight that fact. i admire that they are being quite up front about it.

I always take notes when watching the show to figure out who to vote for AND so I can discuss it half way intelligently with my daughter later on. I am gonna need a bigger notebook this year! Sad it’s not gonna be on next week, but it’s cool they get the 4th of July off.

Love this show!!!

I enjoyed the way they grouped the dancers together last night as they introduced the top 20. I don’t recall them doing it that way before, but perhaps my memory is failing me. Anyway, it was nice to see the dancers perform in their area of strength. Those ballet dancers were amazing. Also enjoyed the very creative baseball routine. It will be interesting to see what the choreographers do with Cyrus.

So . . . does anyone understand how the show will work this season? I know that there will be no results show, so when do dancers get eliminated? The following week?

So glad this show is back again. Love it. :)

Bumping this up.

Just curious - What happened to the girl who was thrown out by her mom? She isn’t in the top 20, but I can’t remember seeing her eliminated during Vegas week. Help!

Yes. The non-dance guest judge is almost always plugging something. I wish they would provide them with a list of basic dance words, or even just some general adjectives besides “incredible” and “amazing.”

My favorite number last night was the ballroom. Not the guy so much, but those girls burned up the stage.

My favorite was the ballet dancers’ number. What I love about watching ballet is that you could take a screenshot of any moment and the result would look like a gorgeous sculpture–every movement and every transition is beautiful.

I’m disappointed about the elimination of the results show–I feel like I’ll never get to know the dancers very well seeing them just once a week. I find it takes me quite a while to be able to distinguish the various hair flinging contemporary girls from one another, and now I’m sure the show will have to dispense with much of the behind-the-scenes stuff that fleshes out their personalities.

MommaJ, do you know how the elimination will work? Anyone?

From what I understand, this is what will happen:

Week 1—dancers perform and we vote; dancers proceed to prepare for week 2
Week 2–show opens with announcement of who is “in danger”; dancers perform and at the end of the show, based upon these performances (and maybe also solos?), the judges decide who goes; we still vote on remaining dancers for next week.

At least that is what I think will happen…

After the dance of the last 3 guys - the ones with the unique styles - I said that I just hoped that when they get something like ballroom or Bollywood, and really perform poorly, that the judges don’t save them because they do one style so well.

It was so nice to watch with both of my Ds. I started thinking how sad it will be when I have to watch it without dancer Ds. (Or it could be cancelled by then.)
