Ta?

My son has been asked to TA a Philosophy course, but he would have to drop AP Euro to do so. Does anyone know if being a TA is viewed more favorably than another academic course?

Is your son still in HS? Then TA is not favorable than academic course.

I agree with Momof2happyboys - he should take AP Euro over TAing this class.

Thx! That’s what I thought

I think it’s not so cut and dried. What does he want to do? If the philosophy teacher is a great potential reference writer (instead of flaky or whatever) and your son is really interested in the subject and only so-so re EH, then this might be an opportunity to show he has creativity and leadership. Is this an unusual honor type of thing to be asked to do this? I would think it does imply responsibility. AP Euro is not a “have too” credential and there will be plenty of other students looking boringly similar. Is he taking 3 or 4 other AP classes besides this? Think it over and maybe also have him ask his college guidance counselor too.

I look at AP Euro as a core class for your history portion of your transcripts and the TA position as an elective. Sometimes you do give up something one way or another for a passion project, but discussing it witht he CG is a very good idea, as well as getting input from the Phil teacher so he understands what the kid’s choices are.
