If you go to an independent school/studio of taekwondo, and your school has no team, is there a rank, title, or national rank or award that merits you as “varsity”?
From the definition "varsity teams are the principal athletic teams representing a college, university, high school, or other secondary school. Such teams compete against similar teams at corresponding educational institutions. ", I don’t see how “varsity” would apply to an independent studio.
Is there something that requires you to be on a “varsity” team? My D attends an independent studio and we describe her rank (dan and title - i.e. 4th dan Master), years of training, and competition results.
There are applicants who play top level basketball but not in a high school. They don’t list it as a ‘varsity’ sport. Same with tennis or golf and many other sports.
Won’t your level be recognized by the belts you earn?
I would say something like:
Taekwondo, 2010-2019, 6 hours/ week, 4th dan Master, NJ State Champion
Unless you are trying to get on the college Taekwondo team, what you want to show is dedication, accomplishment, possibly leadership, and the fact that you can do all this and get good grades too.
…If you’re now studying Taekwondo, didn’t they explain belts?
Agree with @RichInPitt. Lots of independent taekwondo schools have sparring teams, but even so, they’re not secondary school teams. It’s similar to playing club soccer or maybe more like doing club fencing. Just provide the dan, title, and any competition results you do have, plus as @bopper suggested, approximate hours/week.
