Tailoring CommonApp Letter of Rec?

Hi all.

I have a letter of rec from my job who said they’ve written two custom letters of recs (both of which they’re an alum from and feel strongly in their support of me there).

CommonApp is saying that when they try to submit the letter of rec for one of the schools, it will go out to all of the schools they’ve been added to and the letter should apply to all schools. They’ve only been added to one school so far, however.

They’re asking me what to do. What should I tell them?

Tell them to not tailor the LoR

I have heard of people uploading one version of an essay, sumbitting the application to School A, then changing the essay for the remainder of schools before submitting.

This was some time ago, and I don’t know if that would still work. Your best strategy is to have nothing tailored.

You can do it with an essay (although not always a solid strategy) but can’t do it with a LoR.

The letter should highlight your strengths or accomplishments or whatever.

It’s about you - not school A, B, or C.

There’s zero reason to tailor it or even mention a school at all.

Once the recommender submits their form containing the recommendation, it’s locked. It can be assigned to subsequent colleges, but it can’t be changed.

Recommenders should not customize for one college. What they write will be “one and done.”

Of course, you could decide to use this recommendation for one college only: the one the recommender is a graduate of.
