AP Biology-(taking capstone class so partial self study?)
AP Calc BC (taking calc ab so partial self study x2?)
AP English Lit
AP Spanish Lit (taking capstone class so partial self study x3?)
AP US Gov
AP Macro/Micro (taking online course starting over summer)
Is this death or is it manageable? Thanks in advance!
(P.S. I took 5 AP’s my junior year already-APUSH, AP Chem, AP Physics 1, AP English Lang, AP Spanish Lang)
death probably but if you think you can do it go ahead
You forgot to list your hidden class: college apps & essays. Rising seniors always underestimate the work involved.
It looks like it’s really 6 AP equivalents, since the econs look to be a semester each. Personally, I think it’s a lot, but you know your capabilities best.
honestly, I don’t think it would be that hard for you. you already took 5 APs junior year, was that manageable enough? if so, I don’t think these APs would be much different, especially since macro/micro is shorter. lit might take up a lot of time since I know you read a lot of books, and I’m not sure about language APs but I’m guessing Spanish LIT will take up a lot of time too.
if you think you can do it, go for it.
I took 5 APs my junior year and am taking 7 AP exams this year. The only potential problem I see with your courses is the fact that you are trying to self study AP Bio partially which coming from experience, as I did it my junior year, is very difficult and time consuming. Also you should know that taking AB and then just self studying BC will be very tough as there is an extra 3 chapters, at least, of curriculum on the BC exam. Although it can’t really hurt you that much as you will still receive an AB subscore, but just make sure you are prepared to self study these subjects.
@skieurope thanks! yea. i might not be applying to too many colleges so hopefully it won’t be too much of a grind. i’ll have to decide at the beginning of summer i guess
@ihavenoideawow thanks for the encouragement!
@Undecided3494 ooh thanks for the advice! yea. i plan on working through calc over the summer along with my econ class i guess
In general, thank you all for you input! Yes, I realize I don’t actually have to stress myself out that much if I didn’t want to but being the weird person I am I absolutely love doing just that because studying is my aesthetic
I will think about maybe cutting down on one AP though (probably one of the self-studying ones) but yea
oh also @ihavenoideawow it was pretty manageable course load wise but i decided not to take the ap exam for physics and am taking a final for the class instead
You haven’t told us why you want to do this. You should check with your potential colleges and see what will realistically be helpful to have. For instance, I told my daughter not to bother with several of her APs senior year as she didn’t have much or any use for the credits. I’m all for AP credits, I think they can be helpful even if you don’t expect or plan to use them, but some are viewed as redundant or useless by many colleges, and there’s a limit to how many you could realistically make use of even under worst case scenarios. And, I wanted my daughter to relax a bit and enjoy her last weeks of high school rather than stressing out about a huge number of unnecessary exams. Specifically I will say that she wouldn’t have been able to get any credit for English lit, already having taken lang, so she skipped that one. I don’t recall which other ones she skipped, but doing so did make for a much more pleasant end to high school and she was able to spend more time with her friends in those last weeks. Plus, I saved a few hundred dollars.
I think self-studying AP bio is a particularly poor idea. You would be ill-advised to skip freshman bio with such a weak background and so why pay for the AP test?
I’m only a sophomore now with relatively easy APs, but if you love what you’re going to be taking, take it! don’t only take classes that will benefit your major. it’s important to have fun and learn what you want to learn while you can.
I’m taking 4 (possibly 5) APs my junior year: AP art history, AP bio, AP Lang, AP us history, and possibly AP chem if it happens. AP art history is going to be a self study.
I’m going to be a chem major, but I wanted to take AP art history because it’s something really interesting and fun to me. I don’t think you should limit your class choices just to do whatever you think your major will be, because that can change. yes, take classes that will help you, but if you have room and you think you can manage extra classes just because you want more work, go for it. that’s honestly how I feel too, I love studying, I love learning, and I love AP classes.
as for self studying so many classes, I don’t think you should self study that many. bio is doable, I know people who self studied. if you were great in bio and chem if shouldn’t be too difficult, it’s just a looooot of reading.
calc BC may be overkill to self study, but if you’re a math genius it’s not too much.
if you cut down on any AP, cut down on the one that 1.) won’t help your major/minor and/or 2.) won’t be fun for you.
@mathyone i’m actually obligated to take english lit bc i need 4 years of english for uc’s or something or actually i think alot of colleges require you to take 4 years of english so i can’t drop that one.
if you’re talking about the exam though, i could see if i could opt out of the exam possibly
I am talking about the AP exams. Most high schools and colleges require 4 years of English. But some colleges won’t give credit for both English language and English lit. If that’s the case and you aren’t required to take the exam, I don’t see the point. Your parents may balk when you ask them for a check for $700 for exams that you probably don’t need. I don’t even know what AP capstone is or how it gets you those other classes or what college credit you could get for it.
Go for it - it’s totally doable. The AP courses you listed for your junior year (especially the sciences) are pretty difficult in comparison to what you have for your senior year. If you did well in those courses, you should be able to handle those senior year classes just fine.
@mathyone i see what you’re saying and i definitely am going to consider that because i agree that ap exam costs are outrageous.
the capstone courses in my schedule are basically supposed to be a level higher than ap classes and i will be given the opportunity to do research in those areas…i’m pretty much done with most of my college credit/high school graduation courses except for math and english so i’m just taking those courses just to explore but i think those classes are slightly more intense than ap classes so i might be learning more than i would need for the ap biology/ap spanish lit exam.
@swim1128 haha thanks! i hope so!
