I’m a high school student who really wants to study abroad in Japan
and I was wondering if I’m allowed to skip a year or two in college (I’m a Korean student and I know that I’m allowed to do that in Korea…but I’m not sure how it works out in the U.S.)

IF I get a chance to attend a Japanese college right after I finish high school, I’m planning to attend a college for CG and animation
but I’m going to major in chemical/bioengineering in America (kinda confusing, i know…)
Do you think I will have less chance of transferring into a good engineering college after attending an animation college?

Well you probably won’t be taking classes that’ll transfer. I imagine it might be really complicated to transfer credits from one country to another; I have international friends who had trouble with this.

But you’re allowed to take any kind of break you want. Sometimes it takes people up to 6 years to finish a degree because they have to go part-time, take a break, or for other reasons.

Now if you’re on some kind of exchange program or if you’re depending on financial aid, there might be consequences there, so this is probably something you’ll want to talk over with whatever kind of program/university you’re doing or even your high school.

It sounds like you’re talking about taking a gap year.

Apply to colleges as you normally would, and when it comes time to accept an offer, just let the school know that you’re deferring your admissions.

^ but OP would be applying as an international student. I don’t know much about how that works, but personally I wouldn’t risk going through all the effort and trouble to apply and then tell them I won’t be going for awhile.

Depending on the schools, it won’t matter.

I know a good handful of international kids at my school who deferred a year.
Colleges in the US know how common gap years are (especially in Europe; I don’t know about traditions in Asia).

You should probably looking for a study abroad program through a university.

Otherwise, just ask the school for a year off. Most schools allow a year before they make you reapply.
