Taking a break from college, what to do?

I’m not in good health, I have a condition that I’ve had since I was a child. (A skin condition that comes and goes) It’s gradually gotten worse as of late because of the weather and I am supposed to move out to UCI next month. However, I now realize that its not in my best interest to go right now both physically and mentally. Even if I were normal I don’t think I would be able to handle going to college yet because with my mentality right now I’m probably going to do terrible given my habits and the fact that I would be by myself. So I figured why should I mess things up, if I can take a break and re-evaluate what’s best for me? I’m from San Diego. My parents wanted me to stay local but I got rejected by UCSD because while I had a good GPA and ECs, my test scores were low because I didn’t prepare. (A 3.9 GPA, Clubs, Sports, Volunteering, but SAT scores all ranging in the mid 500s) I got accepted to SDSU but I didn’t feel like going there because of its reputation as a party school and pretty much everyone from my high school is going to go there. I’m pretty solid on withdrawing from school either to postpone until next year or reapply to colleges here in SD. So, now I’m posed with a problem.

I’m now thinking of going to a CC to get my general ed. It’s cheaper and I can stay local. What would be the best plan for me? Do I have to reapply? Since I was already accepted by a UC before does that increase my chances of getting accepted to UCSD if I reapply there because the only reason I see for them not accepting me is because people had more competitive scores. I really want to go into some sort of engineering because I’m a math and science oriented person. What can I start doing to gurantee a transfer to UCSD? What activities should I be involved in and what classes should I take?

i think that you should have gone to sdsu, thats a good school. it has a better reputation now than in the past. its the second best cal state. but since it’s too late, go to a community college and take honors classes. make sure you take transferable courses too. many ccc students do not realize that many classes at community colleges do not transfer to 4 year universities. get a 3.5 in those honors courses and i bet anything that you will be accepted into ucsd, probably ucla and ucb too; only depending on the major

Go speak with the transfer dept at the CC immediately & learn about the Cal. Comm. College Transfer Track.

ALL Calif CCs have it.

As a CC student you declare at the onset of your CC career which UC (any of the Cal States, or a California independent college or even some colleges and unis throughout the US) you’ll transfer to.

Follow the track set up for you for 2 years, and you are GUARANTEED admission to that UC (or other).

Better still, it’s binding by the U, but NOT by the student, so YOU can choose to go elsewhere, but the UC MUST accept you, provided you’ve followed the track and all of its requirements.

It’s a great program, but you must sign up at the very start of your program.

I think it’s quite mature of you to recognize your limitations right now.

Best of luck. Really.

Thanks a lot. I’ll call tomorrow both UCSD and my nearest CC.
