Hey, my school has a partnership program with Yale. Chosen high school students can take one class per semester as long as it doesn’t overlap with the school day. My school ends at 2:15, and it’s about 15 minutes away from Yale, meaning that the classes that start at 2:30 (which are ALL of the good ones…) are basically off-limits. So, I have to go with a class that starts later. I plan on majoring in psychology, and during the spring I’m taking a Cog Neuroscience course. As for the fall, I don’t know what to choose, as there aren’t any psych courses. Basically, the following is a list of classes that I have some level of interest in:

The Cinema of War (Film)
The Horror Film (Film)
History and Theory of Musical Performance (Music)

Yeah…not really too many choices. I figure that I might as well just take it easy first half of the year and do something that I’ll find fun/enjoyable. As you can see, I’m interested in music and film. I play guitar, so the music thing can definitely help me look more passionate. Film, though, can make me look a little bit more well-rounded as I don’t have as much prestige in activities regarding film (a few mundane awards). Can anyone here offer insight as to which of those I should take?

Well, I don’t even know if I will be mentioning film on my application- honestly, I’m good with using the computer programs for editing, but I have never won any formal awards or anything, and I probably won’t have the time to make some good movies next year. However, besides music and my psych/neurology research…I don’t have much. I’m in a few clubs here and there, nothing big; will taking a film class make me stand out? Or is to show passion in music the best way to go? I’ll probably put a lot of emphasis on my classical/flamenco guitar awards and honors on my app, so will this be a good supplement? Especially for someone who didn’t take AP Music Theory in high school (rather, I self studied)?

You could write your EC essay on film if you’re really passionate about it; the class is reinforcement.

Since you’re already so involved in music, though, I think it’d be a better idea to continue on that path rather than take a detour with film. You’re a rising senior, right?

Ummm… as far as I know, next year’s courses have not been laid out. You can’t go off of the 07-08 Blue book as classes, meeting times and instructors change year to year.

Take the one that’s most interesting to you. College adcoms aren’t going to spend more than a nanosecond thinking about the difference between a film and a music course.

Mega: thanx for the correction. The single best day of my summers was getting the fat, blue book. I spent the next week scouring it for great classes. Would arrive in Sept with about 15 that I would check out. LOL

No problem. The course descriptions for some of them aren’t up, but the times are. I just wish I had more to choose from; there are SO many that I’d like to take!
