Is anyone familiar with Coursera? How do they run? Do they charge you course by course?
Some courses are free.
If you want a certificate / credential, depending on the vendor, (such as Google,Microsoft) yes, there is a fee.
One can have a short or long term subscription with Coursera and have a wide selection of courses.
Some other programs by colleges have additional fees beyond the Coursera subscription.
My s and his w took a course (maybe more) and it had a lot of work!! They were doing assignments on our ski trip!
H and I have taken a lot of Coursera courses. All were free and very good. The professors are from top notch universities around the world.
I took a whole series of fictional writing courses. H has taken all kinds of science courses- astrophysics, etc. If you want them to be free you have to look for the ‘audit only’ words or something like that, which are very small at the bottom of the sign up page.
My writing series from Northwestern, because I audited them, did not have a way for a teacher to review my writings but that was OK with me. Im signed up for lyrics writing from Berklee School.
I think H, a few years ago, took a course in planetary science from Caltech and paid $15 for a certificate after an exam. But, after that we just audit them for free.
How do you sign up for free courses? Do you just open an account at the website?
Yes
I’ve taken a number of classes on Coursera, including some with tests/projects and certification. Certification classes are often offered as audit, with an extra fee if you want the certificate. During the pandemic I took Stanford’s Machine Learning class, it was tough but excellent. I’ve also taken Google’s Project Manager certification series and several others.
Edx.org also offers classes and certificate programs. Most are free unless you want the certification. I’m currently taking a computer programming class from Harvard, it’s very good.
Is the computer programming class on Edx.org?
Yes, its HarvardX CS50x
