Taking Ap courses online

Hello there…

I wanted to take an AP economics course online because my school doesnt offer it. What would you guys recommend? Preferably, I would like to do it over the summer so as to not add to to the workload in my senior year.

I checked EPGY out but they dont offer economics. JHU offers economics for the next academic year but not for the summer.

Thanks

Ask your counselor. I haven’t really taken any courses online because of VERY horrible feedback from my peers. However, their courses were offered through our county school district. I don’t really know how it really is because I’ve never taken one.

But anyway, ask your counselor. Here, if the school cannot offer it, then they give you an online class free of charge. And the only classes offered during summer are the Pre-AP ones. Those are free, too.

If cost is a factor, then these kinds of program definitely help.

I took AP Macroecon this past spring online and it was a KILLER. Honestly, no one should ever be allow to take econ (or stat shudders) online. I had a nightmare on my hands. Of course, I let my situation escalate into a nightmare scenario, but it was still miserable nonetheless.

HOWEVER, if you are still determined to take AP Econ (and it probably would be wise to take it over the summer if you do. I had extreme overload when I took it), there are a couple different options you can try. Depending on what state you live in, there might be a state-sponsered virtual school where you can take the class for free. Florida, which is where I live, has one of these (www.flvs.net <- I took my class through this school). I believe GA has one as well. If your state does not have one of these schools for free, you can take the class through a state that does have one (For instance, you live in SC which doesn’t have one, but you can still take one through the FL school), although you will probably have to pay a fee. (Though, your school might pay the fees for you. SOME (and I stress only some) school districts will pay for students to take classes online that they are unable to offer. This is something that you will have to talk to your school about to see what they offer.) Best of luck to ya! I hope this helps.

I had planned on taking a few AP courses online this summer as well - AP Microeconomics and AP Psychology. I thought that the school would pay for the courses and put them on my transcript, but I was wrong. I asked my counselor and she said that she wouldn’t put them on my transcript and they wouldn’t pay for the courses. I am allowed, however, to take courses for free through www.ccswebacademy.net and get them added onto my transcript. However, they offer no AP courses over the summer. Anyways, before you get your heart set on taking AP courses over the summer and getting them added to your transcript, I would recommend speaking to your counselor. There is a chance that they won’t add them to your transcript.

Damn… I guess ill try and talk to my counsellor then. I doubt they’ll pay for the courses because I go to a private school here in CT ( we dont have a state-sponsored virtual school here ) …

However, what if I take a course at a local community college or university for that matter ( such as Yale/Uconn,etc )? Are community college classes better than the AP classes in general?

Thanks.

I am not sure if they are better than AP classes. But my guidance counselor wouldn’t even add community college classes to my transcript. You can take them during the school year and get them added, but she won’t let you take them over the summer and add them. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. But your school would probably add them.

If your school does not offer it , don’t stress it because it will not be held against you.

Find out from your school if you take the course will it show up on your transcript. Even if it shows up on your transcript, there is a great chance it will not be calculated in your school’s GPA. Many school will not put grades taken at community colleges on your transcript unless the school has some sort of cross registration with the college. Even then if your school gives you high school credit for the course, you will not have college credit.

I took an AP course online and it was one of the worst educational experiences I’ve had the misfortune of suffering through. If you want to learn the material you’re better off getting a good book on the subject, setting aside an hour every day, and just reading. If it is during the school year you should ask about doing some sort of AP independent study. I did that, rather than an online course, for Computer Science and it was pretty good.

Whats the benefit of calling an independent study? Did it show up on your transcript? If so, how were you tested?

However, doesnt the common app along with university apps have a section where it asks you to mention if you got any college credit?

I wanted to take Economics because I like the subject and figured taking a college class/college-level class would be more interesting than a regular watered down high school Economics class…

THanks

There is not double dipping. If your high school transcripts the course and gives you high school credit, then you cannot get college credit. If you are looking to get college credit then you have to submit an official college transcript with your application, sealed.

A lot of things depend on the school as policies vary from school to school.
Some colleges do not give freshman your credit for college courses taken before matriculation. (when my D took college courses at NYU through a program with her school, the courses and grades were placed on her transcript. The school gave high school credit, but the grades was not calculated on into her GPA).

Even with AP’s many schools will not give placement or credit with out a grade of 4/5. If you are thinking about becoming an econ major, some schools will not allow you to fulfill your major requirements using ap courses.

Some colleges are no longer giving AP credits because they feel that AP classes do not cover the depth and breath given in a college course and many AP students do struggle when taking the upper level courses because they are not grounded in the aspect of writing research papers on a topic constructing thesis statements, etc just parroting back what in the book or rote memorization.

If you self study, take the course on line you will most likely need the score from the AP exam to validate your mastery of the subject. Since the exams will not be given until may 07, you have to think about how must of a boost is taking the course on-line at this time really going to give you?

Actually, some schools do offer concurent credit. I’m at a public charter homeschool program, and my school does. People even graduate with both a high school diploma and an AA degree sometimes.

Wouldnt I get one from the community college certifying that I have completed with the course with a grade of X? I could probably hand that in when I’m done with the community college Macroeconomics semester course in November/December.

I dont really care about the credit. The only reason why I’d put it on my college app is to show that I have taken a college course and that i’ve got good grades in a college course…

THanks

IF you are submitting any grades from a college to another college (even for transfers, grad school, etc), you must go to the registrar’s office and request a copy of your official transcript (the college you are applying to most likely will not accept a student copy of a transcript). You pay the fee, if applicable and the school will print of the transcript (usually with a raised seal and marked official transcript and place it in a sealed envelope (which they will sign the seal). o not open the envelope because it would then become invalid. Or you can place on your transcript request where your want the transcripts sent and the school will mail them out.

Thanks for the info.

In conclusion, you guys dont recommend online courses. However, self studying and taking the AP exam or signing up for a college course is a viable alternative.

Cool… Thanks much.

I do recommend taking courses online…if you’re a motivated individual with great reading and writing skills who doesn’t have a history of procrastination. I’ve taken two APs online (one of them being econ) through Virtual High School. If you’re school is a part of it you can just see your guidance counselor or site coordinator and they’ll sign you up. The site is www.govhs.org . I really recommend it if you are really into it but if its going to make your workload too heavy don’t do it. It’s a REAL COURSE not just something you do in your spare time and you need to treat it as such. There’s no point biting off more than you can chew and then getting a bad grade on your transcript.

Econ shouldn’t be a killer. Most people could probably self study for it.

I’m taking AP Psychology with apexlearning, starting monday. I wonder how it’ll go.

However, whats the advatange of taking an online coures at say, Virtual high school or apex learning to taking an online course at a university like Cornell, Penn State, etc?

I came across an online economics course offered at Penn State for $800 (
http://www.worldcampus.psu.edu/cgi-bin/WebObjects/OnlineCatalog.woa/6/wo/wwTqQLEzF1rg7G5qETpzWg/1.13.2.0.2.0.3.9.2.18.0.2.0</a> ) and the only time constraint is that it neeeds to be done within 6 months. This way, I get to study what I like and also get college credit for it and can put it on my college app. Am I missing something here?

that might be a really great opportunity. the only thing i’m wondering is: is there an actual professor or is it just work for you to complete like a guided self study?

plus for me the vhs courses are free…no way my parents would pay $800…they’d just have me take classes through a partnership program at a community college or something

However, if its Penn State and you get credits for it it would look really really good!

Have decided to go ahead with the northeastern distance learning program: http://www.nuol.edu/</a></p>

I believe there is a professor assigned whom you could email if you have any questions and he/she is the one who has prepared the quizzes, exams, etc but other than that, the professor probably adds no value. 30% of your grade in Northeastern is based on how much you participate on the discussion board so that’d be interesting…

I have taken many APs online, please stay away from Art History
Worst Class Ever

(Even though I enjoy art, the teacher communication and grading was terrible)
