Yes, this yet another chance thread. I would greatly appreciate it if you would chance me please!

Stats:

Ethnicity: African-American
Gender: Female
Location: Georgia
College Class: 2014
Intended Major: Engineering (undecided on which type)

Background: My freshman grades were not the best (2 A’s 4 B’s 1 C) because I just moved to Georgia from Maryland and was depressed and had the whole “screw the world” attitude. But my grades definitely follow an upward trend.

GPA: 3.55 uw 3.80w
8 adv/honors classes
11 AP’s by graduation:
Junior Year:
AP Music Theory
AP Chemistry
AP Calculus AB (only junior to take it. made higher grade than most seniors 90/95)
AP Language
AP U.S. History
Senior Year:
AP Economics
AP Government
AP Calculus BC
AP Biology
AP Physics C

Dont know the scores yet

SAT: 1750 (horrible I know. Retaking in October with SAT II math)
Writing: 530
Math: 650
CR: 570

Extra-Curricular Activities:
Band:
Marching Band (takes up alot of time)
Concert Band
Mentoring-helping middle school students with their music
Interact- Community Service
Rossetta Society- takes learning outside of classroom visiting museums and such

Not alot of EC’s because band really does take up alot of time. Plan on writing one of my essays on it because has had a great impact on my life.

I think that covers everything. So, what are my chances at getting into UMCP?

You grades uw are good enough, and so is the ACT, that SAT is killing you. I would say IN when using the ACT, but the caveat is what program are you applying for? Engineering than it might be dicey, same for journalism.

The gpa will be re-weighted by them, but an UW at 3.55 is good and solid. Also you are from GA and not NJ/NY/CT you stand a better chance since UMD likes to have diversity and people from every state. I am assuming that there aren’t alot of people from GA applying, especially since DS was the only NC student on the floor, the other OOS (excluding NY/NJ) were from Seattle and TN.

^^ Don’t quote me on this, but I think they look at your application – decide whether you’re in or not, then decide whether you’re into your major if it’s a limited enrollment program (business, engineering, etc.).

Oh, but OP I think you’re in, esp with the ACT.

I guess I should have made myself clearer, I am talking about an LEP like Smith

ALSO the race does not matter since the SCOTUS handed down a decision yrs ago (UMICH) that race can not be given any points for application purposes. Even if SCOTUS did not rule in this manner, most people that reply to a chance thread would never make a decision based on race, they make it on imperical info (SAT/ACT, GPA, AP’s, Class rank, ECS). The same holds true if you wrote that you are a legacy, legacies are not hooks!

race is still Definitely a factor when it comes to getting in for college… asians get it the hardest lets not deny that lol but more underrepresented minorities like latinos/blacks get a little leeway and i am not tryna be racist/stereotypical or whatever since im asian and most of my friends are latinos/blacks but its definitely true

colleges can say what they want but that doesnt change the fact that race still matters

yes nyc91 is right. Alot of people may not beleive this but unfortunately race is a HUGE factor in the application process. Most colleges have a race quota that they have to fill just to make the unversity “diverse”.

But that’s another story. If you want to get into engineering to be honest you probably wouldnt make it. I would say you’re in for getting into umd but the engineering aspect of it may be a reach for you because of your SATs unless you could bring it up to a 2000 and above you should be fine.

Get your SATs up and you’ll do fine. And I think if you want to be an engineer, go for it. There are a lot of factors that contribute to success in college and it’s not simply a reflection of the admissions screening process. You can go to UMD without being in the engineering program and do the CORE requirements then ask to enroll in the engineering LEP. Or you may find that something else appeals to you. The main thing is to get your SATs up and get accepted. You can do it!

Thanks everyone for your input! And I’m thinking about changing my major to physics because it interests me a little more than just engineering.

Also, I know that the SAT is a bigger test than the ACT but would it look bad if i just sent my ACT score if i dont do better next time?

^You should ask admissions the SAT vs. ACT question. Some schools do not prefer one over the other - I’m not sure if MD accepts the ACT as a valid SAT substitute.

First of all, your grades are fine, especially with the course load you have taken.

I think your ECs are pretty good actually. The MD application actually asks how many hours per week you devote to each activity on average (well, it did when I applied 2 yrs ago). So, the fact that band is a huge commitment will be apparent.

The SAT is not…TOO bad. Especially since you are retaking it. I think you can definitely pull up at least 2/3 sections to in the 600s. In that case, you are fine.

I would say your race aside you would definitely get into MD. I don’t think physics is LEP so you should be fine (though I heard physics is soul sucking at MD - well, decide for yourself when you get there haha. Definitely do what interests you). A friend with similar SAT scores and grades even got into Smith, so, although on first glance I wouldn’t say you were a shoe-in for LEP programs, considering that you are borderline and you have minority status, well, I think you are in to whatever you want…

One thing I want to remind everyone who does the “chance me” post, every yr there will be numerous kids that we say no way or reach, and they do get in, and then there are some that everybody says IN and probably scholars with merit and they get the thanks no thanks letter.

What you should do is look on the web for class info for 13, so you have a better idea of the stats. A lot does have to do with where you are from, what is your major and even your essays along with the SAT/ACT, GPA and EC’s.

I can’t remember the site, but there is one that you can look at your actual hs, see how many applied, how many were accepted and their acad. stats from previous yrs.
