I’m a rising junior. Is it a terribly stupid decision if I take a gap year so that I can transfer in 2009?

yes…that is utterly lunatic. haha.

It’s a very large risk. Like if it’s something you’re dead set on, and comfortable with then go for it. Like you’ll need to do stuff that’s very productive. A little community service in you town isn’t going to get many second looks. I’d do a little calling arround to schools to see what their view of gap years are. But this is a very weird time to take a gap year. In england it’s a very common thing, but mainly the year before university as you start far earlier there. It’s gaining popularity here, but again it’s mainly with people for freshman year and for those going into top tier schools who have already been accepted and are seeking to mature before going to school.

if you want to take a gap year, the college will ask you why you took your gap year and if you did anything in the mean time. So, if you do want to take a gap year, make sure you do something impressive.

Agreed. Don’t take a gap year if you’re just going to sit on your bum all year. One of my friends is taking a gap year (albeit he is an incoming freshman), and is sailing around the world for the summer and then trying his hand at goat farming in New Zealand. -shrugs- I’d think over it long and hard before making a final decision. Also, I’d consult with your current university on the issue (and make arrangements on how you’re going to fill that time) beforehand. Your university may inquire how you would use that extra time before granting it.
