taking math 118 and 218 simultaneously, out of sequence

Hey everyone,

So I’m a current sophomore at usc with an undecided major. The major that I’m striving to get into (international relations global business) requires both math 118 and 218 completed before junior year (from the website), but I haven’t taken them yet as I just recently decided on my major. I’ve taken both Calculus 1 and 2 at community college before high school graduation and thus did not receive their course equivalences, however, I’ve gotten the prereq for 218 waived from jc calc 1 so I can take both math 118 or 218. However, when I called the office worker at the Math department, she got pretty irritated and told me
that I might not get credit for math 218 because I would be taking them
“out of sequence” (and it violates usc rules) and their finals would be on the same day. She told me that I could “take it if you want, it’s your money not mine”

Does anyone know anything about taking a course and its prereq simultaneously? Would I still receive credit of any type? thanks so much

Call the dept. of your major and ask what you can do. I know someone who was able to take another course that would replace the required course because of scheduling conflict. However, what the lady told you is in line with what I’ve heard. Unless 118 is a co-req of 218, I don’t think you can take 118 and 218 simultaneously. Besides, 118 and 218 have finals on the same day, so not taking one final would be shooting yourself in the leg. If anything, take 118 this semester and take 218 over the summer (if you must).

Hey thanks so much for your response. Math 118 is the prereq for math 218, but someone from the math department waived the prereq for math 218 since I’ve already taken calculus 1 at a community college pre-high school graduation. I think webreg will allow me to enroll in both.

Also, if I do end up taken them together (if possible), would you guys know if the professors would be lenient enough to allow me to take the finals on separate days?

I will definitely try to speak to the irgb counselors and see if I could use math 125 in place of 118 to fulfill the 118 requirement (they’re both more or less calc 1)

anyone else ever take a class and it’s prereq simultaneously? thx
