Not sure if this is a stupid question or not. If I wanted to take some easy gen eds online from home over the summer would i have to pay tuition for the summer semester?

Yes, you would.

Yes, you would have to pay tuition for the summer session. There are things to consider, financially speaking, when it comes to summer classes:

If you take the courses online, you would save the cost of on-campus room & board.

Depending on the course, you may actually find it more challenging to take it in summer. These courses need to fit the same amount of work into a shorter session, so you often need to do a lot of work in a short time, and may find that you have a lot of assignments to do every week (and some summer courses are only six weeks long, meaning they really move quickly).

Financial aid is a little trickier in the summer. For some aid programs, you only have a certain number of semesters’ worth of aid, so if you use aid in the summer, you may not have enough to cover all of your remaining fall/spring semesters. Also, some types of aid cannot be used for online classes.

Our sons take their easy gen eds online via the local community college in the summer and then just transfer those credits to PSU. It saves a lot of money.

I do this too. The grades you transfer in won’t affect your PSU GPA. It won’t show up on your transcript at all. One of my online classes was Speech Communication (transferred in as CAS 100). WOOOOOOO!!! You basically can take anything you want at other colleges. If you don’t see a direct transfer on the website for the course you want to take, you can bring a syllabus to the department to have it reviewed. I’ve done this before…it was so easy.

I would recommend always checking to verify that the credit will transfer, just to be sure. It would be terrible to invest time and money and then have nothing to show for it.

how do I find if a course is a direct transfer? would that be on a psu website or the community college site? I would love to take an easy cas 100 along with some gen eds

I’d ask an advisor. If he can’t tell you, he should be able to direct you to the person who can.

This is a good place to start…

^Yes use that site. If there’s a course at another university that is not on the list and you want to take it, you can bring the college’s syllabus for the course to the department head and he will review it for you.

Which university/class did you take your online speech class? And it transferred as CAS100? Please let me know- thanks!
