taking summer courses at another college

will taking summer courses at another college affect your UIUC overall GPA?

If you intend to transfer the course and it is transferable and is graded, then yes, it is included in calculating your overall GPA.

Is this true for “Dual Enrollment” classes taken in High School, Drusba?

^Depends. If it is a college course that you are using to meet one of the minimum course requirements for admission to UIUC or to meet a requirement for you to be allowed to graduate from the high school then it does not transfer at all (example: taking some English course at a college to meet the fourth high school year of the four year high school English requirement for admission to UIUC). If it is a college course not needed for those purposes, it will transfer for both credit and grade toward overall college GPA (assuming the course itself is one that can be transfered).

First of all, you’ll want to see if the courses will be transferable to UIUC. You can do that here:
www.transfer.org;
(Warning: that site can be excessively difficult to navigate)

As for the grades affecting your GPA, I took some courses at a community college, and I had to specifically request that the community college send my transcripts to UIUC. It might depend on what college you take the courses at, but it seems like you could just not have your transcripts sent if you do poorly in the courses. That way your GPA won’t be affected, but you also won’t receive credit for the courses at UIUC.

Also, note that there are two different GPAs that will appear on your UIUC transcript: one that includes transfer credit, and one that does not. I’m still not exactly sure which one, if either, is considered your “official” GPA. That’s actually been the source of much confusion for me when filling out paperwork asking for my GPA.

I’ve been in engineering school for 4 years and I have one more to go; I’m trying to give back some to this website and I know the answer to your question with no hesitation.

Your community college courses will be included in your overall GPA. The DARS auditing system keeps track of your UIUC only GPA and your overall. You can put down whichever is higher on your resumes, it’s fine.

Dual credit courses may or may not count towards your overall GPA. Chances are that they will, because a community college gave you those credits, not an AP or Clep exam.

If you’re taking courses at a CC, and they are gen eds, there is no reason for you to get less than a B if you are coming to UIUC. Even if you take science, engineering, or math at a CC, and get a C, by all means, transfer the grade. Believe me, anything hard science or math here will be much harder than at a CC, and not necessarily because of the material, but the bad teachers, huge classes, and unrealistically difficult exams.

You are in, and if you’re in engineering, you’re goal is to survive. Community College helps that goal, and I would transfer anything C or above to UIUC. You will thank yourself later on.

And if you’re a humanities major, definitely knock sciences out at a CC. They literally make them harder here than normal, and why should you have to deal with that?
