Taking the GMAT 3 times?

DS has now taken it twice. Even though he made 700 on a number of practice tests, had a tutor and studied a ton, he got 630 the first time and 640 the second time. He normally does very well on standardized tests and is a conscientious studier.

With additional studying and tutoring what are the chances he can significantly better his score by taking it a third time?

What is the general view of someone taking it 3 times?

only going up 10pts the second time prob hurt the worst. def wouldnt recommend 3 especially if it doesnt break 700

Generally retaking is not looked upon that negatively. Don’t retake unless he is sure he will make a big jump. What is studied a ton? Atleast 300 hours right?

If he can’t get his target score the 3rd time, it’s definitely going to start hurting him.

it is very unlikely that he’ll get 700+ his last time. this is my experience with taking the SAT 3 times =). try NEW strategies like earplugs, adderall, reading difficult books for 3 months, etc… they could work right?

but looking at the effort put in already and the results obtained, it’s doubtful that more studying will be of any good.

i’d save the money, apply to the schools aligned with his/her credentials, and rest easy.
