I’m going to be a freshman in college next year, and I’m totally confused about what courses I should take as a pre-med. I plan to major in Classical Studies at Berkeley. Any advice?

It’s going to depend a little bit on what sort of AP credit you have and a lot of other variables. But this is why there are advisers at freshman orientation days.

This would have been common at my alma mater, a large state public in the midwest:

First semester:

Gen Chem 1 + Lab (4 hours)
Calc 1 (5 hours)
Intro class in major (3 hours)
Gen ed requirement - usually English (3 hours)
Online Library research seminar (1 hour, pass/no pass)
Total: 15 hours. There would be recitations (called discussion groups or quiz sections elsewhere) for calc and chem along with the chem lab.

Second semester:
Gen Chem 2 + lab (4 hours)
Intro Bio if no AP + lab (4 hours) - if AP, cell bio (3 hours - no lab)
Course in major (3 hours)
Other Gen Ed, intro psyc was popular (4 hours)
Again total of 15 hours.

Number of hours considered normal at your school may vary, as well as the relative weights.

BRM,

I think they should take physics too.

Addendum-

You can take Physics and Orgo in 2nd year

Most students are not comfortable taking more than two labs in a semester. Plus it’s often really hard to get that scheduled (at least in my experience).

And this is schedule is base on the norm at my university, thus having Calc which met everyday is part of the scheduling difficulty. Also most took physics during junior year with biochem.
