Taking Two Gap Years

I am currently in the middle of a gap year before freshman year of college and considering taking a second gap year. I will not go into the reasons why I am considering this second gap year as that is a separate discussion. However, I will say that I am confident I will use it productively and that I have valid reasons.

My question is whether being two years older than my fellow freshman at college would impede my college experience. Do you feel that the age gap will adversely affect me? Particularly, will it impede my social interactions with other freshman being that I am now 20 and they are 18? I wouldn’t want to feel detached from those around me because of my age.

no big deal assuming you can justify second gap year but generally it might raise some issues for colleges

How it affects your relationship with fellow freshmen will be entirely up to you. You might get along with them better than your age peers who would be juniors. You might get along better with the juniors. You might dislike them all (unlikely if you are a generally sociable person, but I have to toss it out there), or like them all, or like some and not others. Depending on where you do end up studying, there may well be plenty of older freshmen like yourself.

If whatever it is that has you taking another year off before going to college is important to you, go ahead and do that. Don’t let concern about who you might or might not like in your freshman-level classes stand in your way.
