Talents?

You know the part on the application where it asks you what your talents are?

Well, what did you all who already applied put?

I’m not musically inclined, I’m not artistic, I’m not athletic, I can’t cook (nor would it particularly add to the community if I could)…

I’m thinking of putting something along the lines of being good at organizing events / bringing people together, but that sounds like such a cop out. Besides, though I love planning things, the truth is, I’m not really that good at it at all :frowning: - i planned a christmas lunch for the senior citizens and high school students at my church, and 10 people showed up :(. I was one of them. The priest was another. My parents were 2 more. 5 of my catholic friends, and one senior woman. So, yeah, that was exciting…

Hm…I am the copyeditor for my school’s newspaper - think that counts as a talent?

I put that I am almost fluent in Spanish, and that I’m going to be certified as an EMT-Basic in January. I don’t think its a huge part of the application or their decision, they just are trying to get to know who you are. i think the organizing and bringing people together is a good idea, just be clever or creative when writing it.

hm, does knowing another language count? cause I do speak spanish, and I cna read and speak french (my writing is ok), and I’m trying now to learn german. (I want to study both languages and linguistics)

Also, how does admissions for the languages program differ from regular admissions? Is it done seperately, even though its still part of the college?

You have to apply to the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, which is a division of the college. However, if you are majoring in a language, you can’t go in undecided. You have to declare your major to apply. You also need a recommendation from a language teacher. I found out this week that I got in, and am majoring in Spanish.

For talents, I put a couple weird things, but also a few normal ones… like:
-I can accurately pronounce Middle English
-I can wiggle my ears
-I am very good at budgeting/scheduling my time
-I am fast at learning new languages (especially Romance languages)
-I am fairly good at playing the piano

…I think that’s about all I put. It may be kind of out of the norm, but obviously it worked!

I knew you had to apply to the Languages and Linguistics program, though I didn’t know you couldn’t be undecided. I’m pretty sure I want to major in Linguistics, but, just in case, how easy is it to switch? What about switching to a non-language major, though still one in the college (not like switching to SFS)? Or switching from another major to FLL? Also, is it more competitive? Less so? I am almost 100% sure I will be applying to the FLL regardless of the answers, but I’m curious nevertheless.

Did you list them or write it out in sentences?

Sentences for me.

Sentences. The only reason I’m not listing what I put is that it could inhibit your own creativity (i.e. give you an idea you can’t use)
