talking about poltical and social views in your essay

is it okay to voice your political and social views in an essay?

If you can do it in a tactful way and it contributes constructively to the narrative you’re writing of yourself? Sure. A lot of people can’t/don’t do it well, which is why it’s generally advised against.

Be aware of the general political climate of the schools you’re applying to, though. Sending a very liberal essay on same-sex marriages to Bob Jones University is not going to win you any brownie points.

I second the previous poster’s advice. Try to present your political/social views positively, rather than presenting opposing views negatively. You don’t want to come off as judgmental or intolerant.
