TAMS application

Hello and thank you for any replies I may receive. I was wondering if I should apply to TAMS( the Texas Academy of Math and Science) based on my statistics. I am a sophomore in high school with a 4.36 gpa and I love math and science. I am in calculus AB, AP computer science, and honors chemistry. My hope is to be challenged by the course rigor as well as explore research opportunities in physics and chemistry. My PSAT score as a freshman was a 192. The only problem is I have never taken the SAT before. What should I do?

You have to take the SAT first. Will you be applying in-state or out of state?

In state. That’s the thing. I go to KD, but I am not sure whether I should take the SAT and apply or not.

If you’re 10% in your class and live in Texas, you automatically get in. If not, read the below

successfully complete Texas A&M’s required coursework, and
rank in the top quarter of their graduating class on or before the application deadline, and
achieve SAT or ACT test score minimums (including Writing scores), and
combined SAT score of at least 1300 (Math and Critical Reading) with at least a 600 in each of these components, or
composite ACT score of at least 30 with at least a 27 in the Math and English components,

satisfy the State of Texas Uniform Admission Policy, and
ensure all required documents are received by the application deadlin

attend a recognized public or private high school in Texas, and
rank in the top 10% of their graduating class on or before the application deadline, and
satisfy the State of Texas Uniform Admission Policy, and
successfully complete the recommended or distinguished graduation plan*, and
ensure all required documents are received by the application deadline.

NOTE: This is for 10%

Sorry, I think we mean two different things. I was talking about the Texas Academy of Math and Science. Again, sorry for the confusion.

As for the SAT, you should go to the College Board web site…there is a sample test there, and links to a Kahn Academy self study thing.

It looks like you have to sign up for the SAT soon, because you have to take it in January.

In the website, it says you have to “Submit a sophomore SAT score consisting of critical reading, writing, and math sections”

So yes, if you want to study there or apply there. You have to take the SAT as soon as possible

Well, the OP was asking about TAMS & not Texas A & M but, it does appear as if you will need to take the SAT (based on their website: http://tams.unt.edu/admissions/eligibility )

I know it is a great program & you sound like you might be a match. Hopefully some TAMS students or alumni will respond.

Update: I took a practice SAT ( not the PSAT) this morning and I did alright considering I started it at 7 am. However, it needs to improve if I am going to apply. I received a 1900 (610cr 620w 670m). This was my first time attempting a practice SAT test and most of the questions I missed were in the earlier sections. Should I take the real SAT in January and apply?

It honestly depends on you.
I think you can still apply for the January SAT, if you wanted to. At the moment, you have a good score and could possibly improve it in the time you have before the test.
And hey, if you decide to take the test and don’t do as well as you hoped for, don’t fret. You still have other areas in your application (essays, teacher recs, short answers, grades, clubs, etc) to show your potential and interest in math and science.
Like I said before, it really just depends on you if you want to take the test or not.
