TAMU Holistic review candidates Class of 2022

@Debimschneider Around here, 6 tabs means she is in! Have you checked the Manage Applications area in Howdy? You should be able to apply for housing if you have 6 tabs… Isn’t that correct, forum posters?

Are you saying that she still is “In Review” in AIS even after all this time? If so, perhaps a call to Admissions tomorrow morning?

@2018decisions my daughter is also still waiting with bs psych as her first choice. Hopefully we will both get good news this week!

Can anyone put a positive spin on a McAllen offer for my daughter? We are having trouble with it. : ) We were ready to accept a Blinn Team or Gateway, but McAllen has thrown us for a loop. Being outside College Station and the freshman college experience that it offers seems a little like coal in our stocking.

McAllen is such a new program that almost nothing has been shared about it. It is a full admission to Texas A&M, just to a satellite campus. Would you be willing to call or email or do some online research and get some info? There is a new forum thread for McAllen, and perhaps you could share info. This forum may have heard about a handful of McAllen offers, all very recent, right, @Thelma2? I believe they have all been the same major.

@class93mom the positive spin on McAllen is that it is considered full admit and after 8 months she can transition to A&M. Not knowing her background or where ya’ll are from, it will also expose her to a wider world. You never how how that can impact someone. We have gone on several mission trips with our church just across the border in Reynosa. The culture is definitely different along the border. The alternative is to participate in the Program for Transfer Admission (PTA) at a local junior college. Make sure her chosen major is offered and meet the GPA requirement and you are gauranteed admission sophomore year. You may also call admissions and check if she could participate in the Program for System Admissions where she would attend one of the A@M system schools the first year and transfer if you meet the gpa requirements. If a kid wants to be an Aggie bad enough, there are ways to get there.

@Debimschneider My son is still waiting as well. It has been reported by many that A&M admissions has stated it may be mid March. I think it is important to remember that A&M extended the application period to January 10 to accommodate those kids that where impacted by Hurricane Harvey. So in looking at the situation in a more wholistic fashion, I am thankful for 2 things. First is that my Alma Mater demonstrated enough compassion on those families that were impacted to extend the deadline. Second, is that A&M is taking great care in reviewing applications. 43,000 students applied. Many qualified kids will not receive a full offer. Just not enough room. UT has decided to limit enrollment, While A&M is doing its best to educate as many qualified kids as possible and help them realize their dream of being an Aggie.

General Comment on Blinn Team. When I was at A&M (class of 92) Blinn was regarded as “Blindergarden”. Classes where held in a shopping center where the Tap bar is located. So i understand the perspectives of @harleycat and other aggies who attended during that time period. The Blinn Team curriculum is approved by A&M. Just some classes are located of campus. Many A&M profs teach at Blinn. One of my son’s friends on his basketball team was just admitted to Blinn Team and he was a little butt hurt about it. I showed him my Aggie ring and asked him “do you know how many Blinn hours I have in this ring”? He got the point and will enroll at A&M.

@class93mom : I don’t know anything about the McAllen campus, but here are my thoughts.

If your daughter really wants to be an Aggie and this is her offer, then I would take it. It sounds like she can probably switch to the CStat campus after one Semester or at least after a year. That would be better just going somewhere else that she really does not want to go and either staying there for 4 years or transferring to TAMU later from another school.

Since they say it is an ADMISSIONS to TAMU and you can’t appeal it like a PSA or denial decision, then she is an Aggie and there must be a direct pathway to TAMU CStat with grade requirements. Think of it as she was SELECTED for TAMU McAllen. Scour the internet for info and contact TAMU. And I think that there is a McAllen thread on CC, post questions and ideas there and somebody should be able to help. It is just a new admissions option and I don’t know anything about it.

There are just so many people who want to be Aggies. TAMU has to take all of the top 10% by TX State Law. Like many students, your daughter may have a higher gpa or scores or better ECs and time management skills and is better prepared or the rigor of college classes than some of the top 10%. TAMU wants her, they selected her, they were not forced to take her by a State Law.

My oldest daughter was a full TAMU admit after review (2012). My youngest daughter was Blinn-TEAM after review (2017). Initially that was very disappointing. We didn’t know much about Blinn -TEAM but it turned out to be a good thing. McAllen can turn out to be a good thing for your daughter.

Get info and make a plan for how she can get to CStat as soon as possible. Stay positive. Don’t believe anyone who says anything negative. Your daughter was hand selected for TAMU, they just don’t have enough room in CStat but they didn’t want to let her get away so they offered her McAllen.

Perhaps you can make plans to get to CStat for a game or two or for some other event on campus. And surely there will be more students in McAllen in the same situation who can support each other during this minor detour. Buy Aggie shirts and dorm gear so that she is ready for CStat! Can she go to NSC in CStat? Or can she go to FISH Camp? Ask if she can do those things.

Like someone on this thread has said, it isn’t where you start that matters, it is where you finish. Her time in McAllen will go quickly and she will grow with the experience. She will get to CStat, she will earn the Aggie ring and the diploma. She is an AGGIE!

@aggieXdos Thanks for your comment. I wish your daughter luck in the coming weeks!! Fingers still crossed for all of us!

Good luck to everyone this week!

If I don’t get into A&M, is it a possibility to appeal for an offer to Blinn-TEAM or TEAB, bringing up the point of people possibly turning offers down?

@LeStaphSergeant it is always possible to appeal. However, A&M extends more offers than there are available spaces already knowing that a certain percentage of those offers will not be accepted. So the point you mention is not new to them. If you intend to appeal I would focus on unique circumstances/hardships etc that the admissions office may not have considered. If you want to be an Aggie, there is a way. I would suggest looking t one of the engineering academies if you want to be an engineer. You are eligible to transfer to CS after one year.

I’d feel better about my son’s chances if I knew rejection letters have been going out. Does anyone know if that is happening yet?

I think someone posted that admissions told them that rejections have gone out to some applicants. The A&M website states that admission decisions will go from mid to late March

@Stimmer I don’t know personally and I haven’t seen it on this thread, but the girl in Admissions said that some rejection letters had already been sent out.

do you have to be an engineering major to live in krueger hall or mosher hall?

@collegebb4897 I don’t believe A&M has engineering only dorms. You should check the housing website to make sure.

@AggieMomAgain Thanks so much for the words of encouragement! We will start some serious investigating on Monday am about the McAllen offer. And I will report what I find out on the new thread. My daughter has another option that she may choose, but I really appreciate the food for thought. I just want what is best for her!

My daughter got Gateway over a week ago. She has already accepted and all is good but has not received the banner or anything in the mail. Can anyone comment if you know if she will get the banner. Thank you!

My son in Galveston group admitted around Valentines Day is also still waiting for package in the mail (in case that helps). We are assuming it’s on the way out of very busy TAMU.
